Titans Defeat Blugolds For Seventh Straight Win

Taylor Schmidt tallied a season-high 20 points, Alex Richard added 13 points and 12 rebounds, and the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team remained tied for the WIAC lead with a 77-65 victory over UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Jan. 14) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (14-1, 4-0 WIAC), ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, won its fourth straight meeting with UW-Eau Claire (7-8, 1-3 WIAC) despite allowing more than 60 points for the first time this season.

The Titans took the lead for good at 15-12 on a 3-pointer by Schmidt with 4:57 left in the first quarter. UW-Oshkosh went on to maintain a lead of at least 10 points for the final 20:09.

UW-Eau Claire outshot UW-Oshkosh, 51.3 to 48.9 percent from the floor, but the Titans held advantages in rebounds (29-21), assists (12-11), turnovers (18-10) and steals (10-5). The Titans had not allowed an opponent to shoot better than 50 percent from the field in their previous 44 games.

Both teams connected on 10 3-pointers, as the Blugolds drained 10 of 18 shots (55.6 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc while the Titans made 10 of 20 (50 percent).

UW-Oshkosh converted 21 of 31 attempts (67.7 percent) from the free throw line, including 12 of 15 (80 percent) during the second half. UW-Eau Claire made 15 of 22 shots (68.2 percent) from the foul line.

Schmidt made 6 of 9 shots from the floor, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range, and added a game-high four assists. She has scored double-figure points 12 times this season, including each of the past six games. Schmidt is shooting 68.4 percent (13-19) from the field over the past two games, including 80 percent (8-10) from behind the 3-point line.

Richard compiled her sixth career double-double by shooting 5-for-8 from the floor and pulling down six rebounds on both the offensive and defensive ends. She also led all players with three steals.

Eliza Campbell chipped in 10 points and three assists for the Titans, who also received seven points from both Morgan Kokta and Kylie Moe.

Both teams shot 60 percent from the floor during the opening period, but the Titans scored nine points off six Blugold turnovers to claim a 22-18 lead after one quarter.

Consecutive baskets by Richard extended UW-Oshkosh's advantage to 26-18 early in the second stanza. A 3-pointer by Bree Meier cut UW-Eau Claire's deficit to 35-29 with 85 seconds to play in the first half before Moe and Schmidt hit consecutive long-range jumpers to extend the Titans' lead to 41-31 at intermission.

UW-Oshkosh scored the first eight points of the third quarter as Emma Melotik and Kokta drained 3-pointers and Campbell drove for a layup to give the Titans their largest lead of 18 points at 49-31 with 8:09 remaining in the period.

The Blugolds trimmed their deficit to 10 points on three occasions during the second half. Jenni LaCroix hit a 3-pointer to make the score 55-45 with 2:32 to play in the third quarter while Meier's 3-pointer cut the UW-Oshkosh lead to 73-63 with 38 seconds left in the fourth period. A pair of free throws from LaCroix provided a 75-65 score with 26 seconds to play.

Meier led the Blugolds with 11 points off the bench. UW-Eau Claire starter Maddie Dunathan and reserves Kayla Hanley and LaCroix had 10 points each.

Arien Brennan chipped in seven points for the Blugolds to go along with a team-best eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.

UW-Oshkosh plays for sole possession of first place in the WIAC standings when it travels to 21st-ranked UW-Whitewater (14-1, 4-0 WIAC) on Wednesday (Jan. 18).
