Titans Win Early-Season Showdown With Pioneers

Taylor Schmidt scored a season-high 19 points and Alex Richard tied her career high with 15 to lift the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team to a convincing 78-64 victory over UW-Platteville on Wednesday (Dec. 10) in Kolf Sports Center.

Schmidt made 7 of 8 shots from the floor, including both from behind the 3-point arc, and added five assists and four steals. Richard connected on 7 of 13 shots from the field to go along with six rebounds.

Ashley Neustifter added 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Titans (7-1, 2-0 WIAC), while Katelyn Kuehl contributed six points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals.

The win was the Titans' fifth straight over UW-Platteville.

UW-Oshkosh shot 46 percent (29-63) from field, 41.2 percent (7-17) on 3-point attempts and 72.2 (13-18) from the foul line. The Titans outrebounded Pioneers, 40-34, and forced 18 turnovers while committing 12.

A jumper by Neustifter gave UW-Oshkosh an 8-7 lead it never relinquished with 15:25 left in the first half. The basket started a 13-3 run over the next four minutes that saw the Titans stretch their lead to 19-10 at the 11:17 mark. UW-Platteville missed 7 of 8 shots from the floor during the decisive run.

UW-Platteville (6-2, 2-1 WIAC) trimmed its deficit to 21-16 on a layup by Stacy Clark, but the Titans scored 21 of the last 31 points during the last eight minutes of the opening period for a 42-26 halftime advantage.

Pioneer Alyssa Krajco, the WIAC's leading scorer, marked her first points of the contest on a 3-point basket that made the score 44-29 with 18:47 left to play.

UW-Oshkosh responded with the next three points on a Richard free throw and a layup by Marissa Selner. The Titans tied their largest lead at 56-36 after consecutive layups by Taylor Dagon with 14 minutes left.

Trailing 58-38, UW-Platteville whittled its deficit to nine points with a 17-6 run that saw the Pioneers make seven of 10 shots, including 3-for-3 on 3-pointers. The Titans committed four turnovers during UW-Platteville's elongated run.

UW-Oshkosh regained a double-digit lead for good on a 3-point basket by Morgan Kokta that made the score 67-55 with 4:31 remaining. Neustifter buried another 3-point shot for a 70-57 lead on the Titans' next possession.

The Titans limited the Pioneers to just two field goals during the last 4:20 of the game, both of which were in the last minute of play.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, sealed the victory by making six of seven free throws in the last 1:24 of the contest.

UW-Platteville shot 43.1 percent (25-58) from the floor, including 60 percent (9-15) from beyond the 3-point line, and 55.6 percent (5-9) from the free-throw line.

MyKaela Brandt paced UW-Platteville with 19 points. Rachel Cropp added 12 points and team highs with seven rebounds and seven assists. Krajco, who entered the contest with conference-leading averages of 20.9 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, scored nine points and collected six rebounds.

The Titans are off until they visit Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Ga., on Dec. 19.
