Titans Host Pointers In WIAC Tournament Semifinal

UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point battle for a spot in the championship game of the WIAC Tournament when the women's basketball teams face off on Thursday (Feb. 27) in Kolf Sports Center. Tip-off for the WIAC Tournament semifinal is set for 7 p.m.

In Thursday's other semifinal, fifth-seeded UW-Superior (15-11) travels to top-seed UW-Whitewater (22-3). Thursday's winners will play at the higher seed on Saturday (March 1), with the victor receiving the WIAC's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Championship.

Third-seeded UW-Stevens Point (17-9) qualifed for its game against second-seeded UW-Oshkosh with a 77-61 home win over sixth-seeded UW-Platteville on Tuesday (Feb. 25).

UW-Stevens Point and UW-Oshkosh (22-3) are meeting for the sixth time in 15 months. The Titans captured both matchups this year, winning a 75-68 overtime contest on Jan. 15 and a 57-53 decision on Feb. 19.

This game features the two best defenses in the league. UW-Oshkosh allows just 53.8 points per game, while UW-Stevens Point surrenders an average of 58.9. The Titans (+6.2) and Pointers (+5.7) also rank one-two in rebounding margin.

Myranda Tyler leads UW-Stevens Point with 12.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. She also tops the WIAC with 43 blocks. Alyssa Olp has handed out 94 assists to lead the league.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked 14th in the country by D3hoops.com, has had eight different leading scorers this year. The Titans are paced in scoring by Sarah Stecker (11.8) and Taylor Schmidt (10.5). Katelyn Kuehl tops the squad in rebounding average at 7.4. UW-Oshkosh averages a league-leading 14.2 assists per game.

UW-Oshkosh owns a 14-11 record in WIAC Tournament games, including a 4-3 mark against UW-Stevens Point. The Titans won the first WIAC Tournament held in 1999.

UW-Stevens Point has captured the last six WIAC Tournaments. The Pointers have won 24 of their previous 32 WIAC Tournament contests.

Tickets will be available in Kolf Sports Center on Thursday from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Fans can also purchase tickets when the doors open at 5:45 p.m. Prices are $9 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $3 for students.
