Titans Grind Out Win In Superior

UW-Oshkosh staged an early second-half scoring run and then held on for a 56-52 victory over the UW-Superior women's basketball team on Saturday (Dec. 7) in Superior.

The Titans (8-0/2-0 WIAC) remained undefeated after Taylor Schmidt clinched the win on two free throws with six seconds left.

UW-Superior (2-4/0-2 WIAC) trailed by four points at halftime, but pulled within 30-29 on a three-pointer by Sally Linzmeier. UW-Oshkosh responded by holding the Yellowjackets scoreless for the next six minutes.

Marissa Selner started eight straight UW-Oshkosh points with two foul shots. Brittany Mirsberger sank a jumper, while Ashley Neustifter made a jumper and lay-up to give UW-Oshkosh a 38-29 lead with 12:37 to play.

A deep jumper from Maggie Novak increased UW-Oshkosh's lead with eight minutes remaining. Sarah Stecker tacked on a three-point play to make it 52-42 with 2:10 on the clock.

The Yellowjackets came buzzing back with two Linzmeier buckets and a three-pointer from Brynn Liljander. With nine seconds to go, Britnee Blake hit 1-of-2 free throws to pull UW-Superior within 54-52.

UW-Oshkosh was led by Neustifter, who tallied 13 points and six assists. Selner and Stecker each scored 10 points, while Katelyn Kuehl and Alex Richard each grabbed seven rebounds.

The Titans finished with 42 percent shooting (22-52) from the field, to go with 2-of-11 success (18 percent) from three-point range and 10-of-16 accuracy (63 percent) at the foul line.

During the first half, Selner made a lay-up and Schmidt swished a jumper to put the Titans up, 6-2. Linzmeier followed with a mid-range hoop to tie the score at 8. Kuehl came back with a conversion at the foul line, and UW-Oshkosh would lead for the final 34 minutes.

UW-Superior cut its deficit to one on multiple occasions, including Hadley Skalkoski's lay-up that made it 22-21. The Titans then answered with five quick points from Neustifter and a jumper by Alicia Tollefson.

The Yellowjackets couldn't overcome their 20 turnovers. UW-Superior compiled 44 percent shooting (22-50) from the field, 33 percent (4-12) from long range and 67 percent (4-6) at the charity stripe.

Linzmeier topped all scorers with 21 points, as Skalmoski totaled a game-high 14 rebounds and three blocks. Liljander tacked on 13 points and three assists.

UW-Oshkosh has a road game at UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Dec. 11).
