Titans Finish Third In National Free Throw Rankings

UW-Oshkosh ranked third among 432 NCAA Division III women's basketball teams with 77.3 percent free throw shooting this past season.

The Titans made 394-of-510 attempts at the foul line. Only Kenyon College (Ohio) and St. Lawrence University (N.Y.) converted at a higher rate. Kenyon College shot 79.2 percent (290-366) for the year, while St. Lawrence University came in a 77.5 (327-422).

UW-Oshkosh guards Katie Kitzke (Sr. • South Milwaukee) and Megan Wenig (Sr. • Oshkosh) both ranked in the top-38 shooters nationwide. Kitzke made 86.3 percent (88-102) of her foul shots to list 17th. That mark also ranked ninth in WIAC history. Wenig sank 83.5 percent (91-109) of her free throws for the 38th-best rate in the country.

UW-Oshkosh also received a strong contribution from forward Katelyn Kuehl (So • Fond du Lac), who made 81.1 percent (77-95) of her shots at the free throw stripe. During a January win over UW-La Crosse, Kuehl made 16-of-17 shots.

The Titans had three games this year where they made better than 93 percent of their foul shots. UW-Oshkosh sank all seven attempts at UW-Eau Claire, 15-of-16 at Lakeland College and 14-of-15 at home against UW-River Falls.

During the 2010-11 season, UW-Oshkosh led the nation by shooting 78.6 percent from the free throw line.

In the national rankings for scoring defense, UW-Oshkosh listed 30th by allowing an average of 50.8 points per game. The Titans, who led the WIAC, surrendered 46 points or less in 12 contests. Tufts University (Mass.) allowed an average of 42.9 points for the nation's lowest mark.
