Fischer, Kitzke, Wenig Earn Top WIAC Honors

UW-Oshkosh head coach Brad Fischer and guards Katie Kitzke (Sr. • South Milwaukee) and Megan Wenig (Sr. • Oshkosh) have been named to the 2013 All-WIAC Women's Basketball Team.

Fischer claimed the league's top coaching honor after guiding the Titans to a 20-6 record and a second-place finish in the conference standings. In his first season at the helm, Fischer led UW-Oshkosh to the largest one-season improvement in WIAC history. The Titans went from a ninth-place 1-15 record (7-18 overall) in 2012 to a 12-4 mark in 2013. Fischer became UW-Oshkosh's first WIAC Coach of the Year since Pam Ruder in 1998.

Kitzke and Wenig were chosen to the 10-member first team after receiving honorable mention status a year ago. Both players started all 26 games and helped the Titans to their first 20-win season since 2005.

Kitzke averaged 12.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while ranking third in the league in free throw percentage (86.3) and ninth in both scoring and three-pointers (35). She also tallied 41 assists and 28 steals.

During December, Kitzke scored a career-high 25 points twice in one week. She recorded the figure in wins of 71-57 over UW-Platteville and 66-58 over Adrian College (Mich.). Kitzke also scored 22 points in a 66-64 victory over UW-River Falls on Feb. 9.

Kitzke started 77 of the 101 games that she played in during her UW-Oshkosh career and totaled 1,156 points, the 10th-highest total in school history. Her 82.8 percent (317-383) foul shooting is a program record. Kitzke finished her career with 147 three-pointers (third in school history), 142 assists and 94 steals.

Wenig averaged 13.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.04 assists per game while shooting 40 percent (47-117) behind the three-point arc and 84 percent (91-109) from the free throw line. She ranked fourth in the WIAC in scoring, free throw percentage, three-pointers and three-point percentage. Wenig compiled 85 rebounds, 79 assists and 22 steals.

Wenig scored 20 points three times this year – in a 74-38 victory over Marian University on Dec. 17 and during defeats of 52-46 to UW-Eau Claire on Jan 9 and 59-50 to UW-Stevens Point on Feb. 22. She dished out a career-high eight assists in a 45-36 win over UW-Stout on Jan. 12.

Starting 81 of the 100 career games that she played in, Wenig totaled 1,088 points, 306 rebounds, 260 assists, 142 three-pointers (fourth in school history) and 81 steals. She ranks as the program's 14th-leading scorer.

Other players named to the All-WIAC First Team were Sally Linzmeier and Connie Urmanski of UW-Superior, Cortney Kumerow and Kaitlyn Thill of UW-Whitewater, Sarah Bingea of UW-Eau Claire, Briana Radowicz of UW-La Crosse, Brittany Gregorich of UW-River Falls and Sam Barber of UW-Stevens Point.
