Yellowjackets Slip Past Titans In WIAC Standings

Connie Urmanski scored 18 to help UW-Superior erase a 17-point deficit and defeat UW-Oshkosh, 66-58, on Saturday (Feb. 2) in Superior.

The Yellowjackets are now tied for second place in the WIAC with a 10-3 record (18-4 overall). UW-Whitewater leads the league at 10-2, while UW-Stevens Point is 10-3 and the Titans fell to 9-3 (17-4 overall).

UW-Oshkosh played its trademark strong defense during the first 15 minutes, allowing just three field goals. Katie Kitzke (Sr. • South Milwaukee) and Megan Wenig (Sr. • Oshkosh) buried consecutive three-pointers to take an 8-4 lead after six minutes.

More deep jumpers from Kitzke and Ashley Neustifter (Fr. • Oshkosh) helped the Titans pull away. After Sarah Stecker's (Jr. • Menasha) lay-up with 4:25 on the clock, the margin was 26-9.

The Yellowjackets tallied 12 unanswered points to close the half. Following two free throws by Allyssa Lindberg, Urmanski scored eight straight – including a pair of triples. UW-Superior's deficit was 26-21 at intermission.

UW-Oshkosh responded after halftime, as Kitzke scored her team's first seven points for a 31-27 advantage. Katelyn Kuehl (So. • Fond du Lac) finished off a three-point play and Wenig drained a three-ball to make it 45-35 with 12:50 remaining.

A 19-4 run put UW-Superior in the driver's seat. Urmanski dropped in a lay-up and two foul shots, while Sally Linzmeier counted a jumper and three free throws. Deandra Vavra then hit a lay-in and a three-pointer to put the Yellowjackets ahead, 54-49, with 5:17 left.

The Titans used a late triple by Neustifter to pull within four (62-58), but two missed lay-ups in the final minute cost them a chance at extending the game.

Kitzke finished with 17 points, while Kuehl added 12 points, Stecker nine rebounds and Wenig four assists. Wenig became the fifth player in school history to total at least 1,000 points and 250 assists.

UW-Oshkosh shot 38 percent (20-53) from the field, including 38 percent (8-21) from downtown and 83 percent at the foul line (10-12).

The Yellowjackets converted 44 percent (23-52) of their shots, 25 percent (3-12) of their three-pointers and 17-of-21 free throws (81 percent). Both teams grabbed 33 rebounds.

Urmanski contributed five rebounds and five assists. UW-Superior also used 12 points and nine boards from Hillary Peterson, 13 points and seven rebounds from Linzmeier and 12 points from Kristen Nett.

The Titans host nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday (Feb. 6) in Kolf Sports Center.
