Titans Squash Pioneers At Free Throw Line

UW-Oshkosh held a 19-point advantage at the foul line during its 62-52 women's basketball win at UW-Platteville on Wednesday (Jan. 23).

The Titans converted 19-of-23 free throws (83 percent), while the Pioneers went 0-for-5. UW-Oshkosh (15-3/7-2 WIAC) is outscoring its opponents by 8.1 free throws per game this year.

Megan Wenig (Sr. • Oshkosh) topped all players with 16 points and three assists, while Sarah Stecker (Jr. • Menasha) counted 14 points and seven rebounds. Alicia Tollefson (So. • Crystal Falls, Mich.) added nine points and Katelyn Kuehl (So. • Fond du Lac) eight boards for the Titans.

A hotly contested first half featured six ties. Melissa Carmody sank two three-pointers for the Pioneers (5-14/1-9 WIAC), as Liz Lawinger's lay-in put the home team on top, 15-10.

Tollefson and Wenig counted back-to-back triples to vault UW-Oshkosh ahead. Ashley Neustifter's (Fr. • Oshkosh) jumper with 2:47 on the clock then tied the score at 27.

Alyssa Krajco made two inside buckets just before halftime to give UW-Platteville a 34-31 deficit.

McKenzie Forseth made a lay-up early in the second period to put the Pioneers in front, but that would be their final lead. The Titans went on a 13-2 run that featured a three-ball from both Tollefson and Wenig. Neustifter's hoop with 8:47 remaining made it a 49-39 advantage.

UW-Oshkosh led by at least five the rest of the night. The Titans closed the game with 11-of-12 free throw shooting in the final five minutes.

This was just the third time all season that the Titans lost the rebounding battle, as UW-Platteville held a 37-31 margin.

UW-Oshkosh finished with 42 percent accuracy (19-45) from the field and 28 percent shooting from downtown (5-18). The Pioneers marked 39 percent (24-62) overall shooting with 4-of-15 success beyond the arc (27 percent).

Carmody tallied 15 points and six rebounds, in addition to 14 points by Krajco and 11 points and eight rebounds from Claire Poad.

The Titans take on UW-La Crosse this Saturday (Jan. 26) in Kolf Sports Center.
