Titans Outlast Blue Devils In Low-Scoring Affair

Megan Wenig (Sr. • Oshkosh) dished out a career-high eight assists and was the leading scorer in UW-Oshkosh's 45-36 victory over UW-Stout on Saturday (Jan. 12) in Kolf Sports Center.

Wenig finished with 13 points, including the final six for the Titans (13-3, 5-2 WIAC). UW-Oshkosh also received eight points and 12 rebounds from Katelyn Kuehl (So. • Fond du Lac) and eight points, four rebounds and four steals from Sarah Stecker (Jr. • Menasha).

Neither team could find its offensive rhythm, as the squads combined to make just 1-of-17 shots to begin the contest. UW-Stout (8-8, 2-5 WIAC) shot 25 percent (6-24) from the field in the first half and finished the game at 29 percent (14-48). UW-Oshkosh made just 5-of-26 shots (19 percent) in the opening period and concluded the contest at 33 percent (16-48).

There was one basket in the first 6:20 of play. Brea Boomer then sank a pair of lay-ups to give the Blue Devils a 5-2 lead. The Titans came back with a jumper and lay-in by Stecker to go ahead, 8-7, with 7:37 on the clock.

UW-Stout tried its luck from long range, as Kyleigh Herbert and Katie Nickles drained three-pointers to give the Blue Devils a 14-8 advantage. UW-Stout went to halftime with a 16-13 lead.

The first five points of the second half belonged to UW-Oshkosh. Herbert and Nicki Alexander then connected on three-point shots to give UW-Stout a 24-20 lead with 15 minutes left.

Katie Kitzke (Sr. • South Milwaukee) put the Titans up for good with a lay-in at the 8:49 mark. She also converted a strong drive to the basket to give UW-Oshkosh a 35-32 lead with 6:33 left.

Over the last 4:56, UW-Oshkosh posted a 10-2 scoring run. Wenig accounted for six free throws to ice the game.

The nine points of both Boomer and Herbert led UW-Stout, which was averaging nearly 70 points per game. Shelby Sterba paced the Blue Devils with six rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh won the rebounding scuffle, 40-32, while UW-Stout owned 19 of the game's 37 turnovers.

The Titans made 11-of-14 free throws (79 percent), but converted just 2-of-13 deep attempts (15 percent). UW-Stout shot only 40 percent (4-10) from the free throw line and 25 percent (4-16) behind the arc.

UW-Oshkosh hosts league-leading UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Jan. 16) in Kolf Sports Center.
