Titans Top Green Knights For Sixth Straight Win

UW-Oshkosh scored the final 10 points to hold off St. Norbert College during its 58-45 women's basketball win over the Green Knights on Friday (Dec. 28) in De Pere.

The Titans (10-2) won their sixth straight contest after holding the three-time defending Midwest Conference champion to just 28 percent (18-64) shooting from the field. St. Norbert College (8-2) missed its last seven shots over the closing four minutes.

St. Norbert College trailed 44-29 with 13:45 left before going on a 16-4 scoring run to get within 48-45 with 3:02 remaining. The Titans actually held a 48-34 advantage before Tasha Giese scored six points and Krista Hawkinson four during an 11-0 Green Knight run.

Megan Wenig (Sr. • Oshkosh) then scored eight straight UW-Oshkosh points in the final three minutes to help the Titans pull away. Wenig tallied a game-high 19 points, while grabbing four rebounds.

St. Norbert College grabbed an early 11-7 lead on a lay-up from Giese. Sarah Stecker (Jr. • Menasha) then dropped in a jumper and a lay-in to put the Titans ahead, 12-11. UW-Oshkosh stayed on top for the rest of the game.

Wenig's three-pointer and two foul shots by Katelyn Kuehl (So. • Fond du Lac) stretched UW-Oshkosh's advantage to 19-11. Wenig made another triple late in the first half to help the Titans take a 27-18 lead to intermission.

Giese opened the second half with a three-point play, but the Green Knights couldn't pull any closer than six points. Stecker finished a perfect 6-for-6 on free throws, including two that gave UW-Oshkosh a 48-34 advantage with 7:35 left. Stecker booked 12 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double.

Kuehl added 12 points and three rebounds for UW-Oshkosh, which made 20-of-24 free throws (83 percent). The Titans shot 41 percent (17-42) from the field and 33 percent (4-12) behind the arc.

Giese finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end. Lauren Carmen added 10 points and Hawkinson eight for the Green Knights.

St. Norbert College found the net on just 1-of-16 three-point tries (6 percent) and 8-of-11 free throws (73 percent).

UW-Oshkosh resumes WIAC play by hosting UW-Superior on Thursday (Jan. 3) in Kolf Sports Center.
