Titans Pounce On Sabres Right Away

Megan Wenig (Sr. • Oshkosh) tallied season-bests of 20 points and seven rebounds in UW-Oshkosh's 74-48 women's basketball win over Marian University on Monday (Dec. 17) in Fond du Lac.

UW-Oshkosh (7-2) jumped out to a 19-3 lead in the first 10 minutes of play and never looked back. The Titans made 20-of-25 free throws (80 percent) while holding the Sabres to just 29-percent shooting from the field (12-42).

Marian University (3-6) went in front, 3-2, on a deep jumper by Amelia Mirsberger. The Sabres then went scoreless for the next seven minutes as UW-Oshkosh counted 17 points. Wenig drained two three-pointers and a pair of free throws during that span, while Sarah Stecker's (Jr. • Menasha) lay-up put UW-Oshkosh ahead, 19-3.

The Sabres tried to claw back, using Rissa Cerveny's jumper to pull within 21-12. Wenig sank a long-distance shot before halftime to make it 30-19.

Katie Kitzke (Sr. • South Milwaukee) sank four free throws and Wenig added another triple to extend the Titans' advantage to 41-27. UW-Oshkosh then scored nine straight points, using lay-ins from Katelyn Kuehl (So. • Fond du Lac), Brittany Mirsberger (So. • Chilton) and Ashley Neustifter (Fr. • Oshkosh) to go on top, 54-29, with nine minutes remaining.

After four consecutive points by Kuehl, Alicia Tollefson (So. • Crystal Falls, Mich.) scored six in a row to make it 71-36.

Kitzke added 11 points and five rebounds for the Titans, while Tollefson contributed nine points and four rebounds and Stecker six points and five rebounds. Neustifter led UW-Oshkosh with five assists.

Ashley Backes topped the Sabres with 10 points. Cerveny scored seven points and collected four rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh, which was playing Marian University for the first time since the 1996-97 season, shot 49 percent (24-49) from the field and grabbed 48 of the 65 rebounds. The Titans made six of their 15 three-pointers (40 percent).

Marian University shot just 20 percent (3-15) behind the arc and 55 percent (11-20) from the free throw stripe.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Las Vegas (Nev.) for a game against North Central College (Ill.) on Thursday (Dec. 20).
