12th-Ranked Pointers Spoil Titans' WIAC Opener

Sam Barber scored the first six points of a 13-0 run that clinched UW-Stevens Point's 64-55 win over the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team on Wednesday (Dec. 5) in Stevens Point.

The Pointers (4-2/1-1 WIAC), ranked 12th by D3hoops.com, held a 31-27 lead at intermission. To start the second half, Barber hit a pair of jumpers and a lay-up. Following a three-point play by Brooke Allen, Barber made another lay-in to take a 44-27 advantage with 16:31 to play.

UW-Oshkosh's (4-2/0-1 WIAC) next four points came on Sarah Stecker (Jr. • Menasha) free throws. The Titans put together an 11-2 scoring streak that included a three-point play from Stecker. When Katie Kitzke (Sr. • South Milwaukee) drained two foul shots with six minutes left, the deficit was 52-46.

Taylor Bahr came right back with a mid-range bucket and a hoop in the lane. Liz Althoff then swished four free throws in the final minute to clinch the victory.

Barber topped all players with 19 points and three steals. The Pointers also used 11 points and six rebounds from Althoff, in addition to 10 points by Bahr and 10 rebounds by Josi Schultz.

Four Titans reached double figures, as Stecker totaled 12 points (eight free throws) and Kitzke, Heather Conroy (So. • Wisconsin Dells) and Megan Wenig (Sr. • Oshkosh) each booked 10. Ashley Neustifter (Fr. • Oshkosh) hauled in eight rebounds, including five on the offensive end.

UW-Stevens Point also started strong during the first half. Barber connected on back-to-back jumpers to gain an 11-6 lead. A triple from Althoff made it a 22-8 margin midway through the period.

The Titan defense stepped up, holding the Pointers to one field goal in a seven-minute span. Wenig buried consecutive three-pointers to pull within 25-19. After four straight points from Stecker, Katelyn Kuehl (So. • Fond du Lac) nailed two free throws to tie the score at 27 with 1:23 on the clock.

Overall, the Pointers outshot the Titans, 49 percent to 30 percent from the field. UW-Stevens Point made 2-of-7 deep attempts (29 percent) and 10-of-16 free throws (63 percent), while UW-Oshkosh succeeded on 3-of-13 triples (23 percent) and 18-of-21 foul shots (86 percent).

The Pointers held a 42-32 rebounding edge, as UW-Oshkosh won the turnover battle, 15-23.
