Titans Tip Off Season In Iowa

UW-Oshkosh has four starters returning when it begins the 2012-13 women's basketball season at Ashford University on Saturday (Nov. 17) in Clinton, Iowa. The contest is scheduled to begin at noon.

The Titans bring back seven of their top eight scorers from last year. That group includes seniors Katie Kitzke (South Milwaukee), Megan Wenig (Oshkosh) and Ashley Winterfeldt (Hortonville), who each started all 25 games a season ago.

Kitzke led UW-Oshkosh in scoring during 2011-12 at 13.8 points per game and in 2009-10 at 10.9 points per game. She recorded a team-high 26 steals last year while hitting 39 percent of her three-pointers and 79 percent of her free throws.

Last season, Wenig ranked third in the WIAC in free throw shooting (84 percent) and fifth in assists (3.4 per game). She added 21 steals while topping the league in minutes played (34.6 per game).

UW-Oshkosh's top returning rebounders from last season are Heather Conroy (So. • Wisconsin Dells), with an average of 4.8, and Sarah Stecker (Jr. • Menasha), with an average of 3.2.

Other letter winners back for the Titans are guards Amanda Crahan (So. • Bancroft), Nichole Paisar (So. • Leopolis) and Alicia Tollefson (So. • Crystal Falls, Mich.) and forwards Brittany Mirsberger (So. • Chilton), Alissa Schuh (So. • Freedom) and Shelby Serafin (So. • Amherst).

Guard Katelyn Kuehl (So. • Fond du Lac) joins UW-Oshkosh after transferring from Wisconsin Lutheran College. She was named the 2012 Northern Athletics Conference Freshman of the Year after averaging 9.1 points and 5.9 rebounds in 29 starts.

Ashford University competes as an independent in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Saints are 1-2 this season after posting a 10-20 record last year. Ashford's offense features 12 points per game from Madison Wagner and eight points apiece by Gaby Ayon and Briaunna Guthrie.

The Titans are looking for their 30th win in their last 39 season openers.
