Eighth-Ranked Pointers Hold Off Titans

UW-Stevens Point didn't score during the final five minutes, but its performance over the first 35 minutes was enough to register a 62-54 win over the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team on Saturday (Jan. 22) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Pointers (16-2/9-0 WIAC), ranked eighth by D3hoops.com, marked an 18-4 scoring run early in the second half to seal the game. Britta Peterson tallied the first four points of the streak, while Josi Schultz tacked on six more to stretch the UW-Stevens Point lead to 51-31 with 9:40 left.

Ashley Averkamp and Cassie Bandow each dialed up a three-ball to put the Pointers up, 62-42. The Titans (9-9/4-5 WIAC) then compiled the last 12 points of the contest. Eight of those came at the charity stripe, including four by Laura Ebbens (Sr. • Appleton).

Petersen topped the Pointers with 16 points and six rebounds. Averkamp tacked on 14 points and Bandow 10 for UW-Stevens Point, which drilled 56 percent of its three-point tries (5-9). The Pointers added 47 percent shooting from the field (26-55) and 5-of-11 marksmanship at the foul line (46 percent).

Scoring 15 of 17 points, the visitors took hold of the game early. Petersen obtained a 5-4 lead with her jump shot, as Averkamp and Andrea Flease also booked two points. UW-Stevens Point then got three hoops in the lane to gain an 18-6 cushion.

The Titans came back with eight unanswered points, using two Michelle Boeder (Sr. • Oshkosh) triples to make it 20-16. That score stood for nearly four minutes before Shelby Churchill (Sr. • Sheboygan) notched a jumper and lay-in. Averkamp responded with the Pointers' final seven points to stretch the margin to 33-26 at intermission.

UW-Oshkosh was topped by Boeder's 14 points and Churchill's nine rebounds and eight points. Ebbens marked 12 points and three assists for the Titans, who swished 18-of-19 free throws (95 percent). UW-Oshkosh also hit 35 percent from the field (16-46) and 4-of-11 from deep (36 percent) while winning the rebounding battle, 35-29.
