15th-Ranked Warhawks Oust Titans

Five players in double-figure scoring were not enough for the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team as it lost, 76-64, to nationally ranked UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Jan. 13) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (5-10/0-6 WIAC) was led by the 16 points from Michelle Boeder (Jr. • Oshkosh). The Titans also received 13 points from Katie Kitzke (Fr. • South Milwaukee), 11 from Megan Wenig (Fr. • Oshkosh) and 10 points each from Heidi Baerenwald (So. • Appleton) and Laura Ebbens (Jr. • Appleton).

Baerenwald complimented her scoring by gathering 10 rebounds in the game for her fourth double-double of the season. Wenig and Ebbens each dished out four assists in the contest, while Boeder pulled down six rebounds.

UW-Whitewater (12-3/5-1 WIAC) was paced by the 23 points, including 15 in the first half, from Kelsey Hendrickson. The Warhawks received 17 points from Chantel Burg, 13 from Cortney Kumerow and 10 from Nicole Bundy. Burg added 10 rebounds while dishing out three assists.

A jumper from Boeder gave the Titans a 3-2 lead 53 seconds into the contest, while UW-Whitewater took a 4-3 lead on a pair of free-throws from Hendrickson.

UW-Oshkosh took its second advantage of the game (5-4) at the 17:30 mark of the first half on Boeder's lay-up. The Warhawks then built a 9-5 cushion on a pair of inside hoops from Burg and Kumerow.

UW-Whitewater, ranked 15th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, staged an 8-2 scoring run midway through the first half to take an 18-10 lead. Four points from Ebbens pulled the Titans within four 7:18 to play before the half.

Down six (20-14), UW-Oshkosh answered with an 8-2 run of its own, tying the game at 22 at the 3:30 mark of the first half. Back-to-back three-pointers from Bundy and Hendrickson broke the tie, leading UW-Whitewater to a 37-33 halftime advantage.

The Warhawks built their lead to open the second half, holding a 44-35 cushion at the 16:29 mark thanks to a lay-up from Kumerow. Baerenwald cut the Titans' deficit to five (46-41) with 13:12 to play on a lay-up, but an 11-3 run by UW-Whitewater gave it a 57-44 cushion at the 8:17 mark of second half.

UW-Oshkosh got as close as nine (62-53) on a jumper from Dannielle Bauer (Jr. • Dell Rapids, S.D.). Soon after, another triple by Hendrickson put the Warhawks back up by double-digits at 65-53.

UW-Oshkosh shot 44.2 percent (23-52) from the field and 60 percent (12-20) from the free-throw line. The Titans made 6-of-11 attempts (54.5 percent) from beyond the three-point line while gathering 35 rebounds and committing 17 turnovers.

UW-Whitewater made 26-of-60 from the field (43.3 percent), 15-of-24 from the charity stripe (62.5 percent) and 9-of-21 from three-point range (42.9 percent). The Warhawks gathered 37 rebounds and committed 10 turnovers.
