Yellowjackets Sting Titans

Poor three-point shooting hurt the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team during a 59-45 loss to UW-Superior on Saturday (Jan. 9) in Superior.

UW-Oshkosh (5-9/0-5 WIAC) missed all 15 of its three-point shots and finished the contest shooting 31 percent (18-58) from the field. The Titans made nine of their 11 free throws (81.8 percent).

UW-Superior (6-7/1-4 WIAC) shot 43.4 percent (23-53) from the field as it snapped a 47-game losing streak to UW-Oshkosh. The Yellowjackets, who also ended a 30-game WIAC losing streak, shot 50 percent (10-20) behind the three-point arc and 75 percent (3-4) from the free-throw line.

The teams traded baskets to start the game, with UW-Oshkosh taking an 8-5 lead on a jump shot by Shelby Churchill (Jr. • Sheboygan) at the 16:51 mark of the first half. UW-Superior then took an 11-8 lead on three-point baskets by Connie Urmanski and Jesa Hall.

After UW-Oshkosh's Laura Ebbens (Jr. • Appleton) tied the score at 11 on a three-point play with 11:35 left in the first half, Hall drained a three-point shot to start a 12-2 scoring run for the Yellowjackets. UW-Superior, which made its last seven three-point shots of the opening period, built a 32-19 lead before settling for a 34-22 advantage at the break.

Dannielle Bauer (Jr. • Dell Rapids, S.D.) brought the Titans to within 10 points (34-24) on a jump shot, but a pair of lay-ups by Hailey Hart extended the Yellowjackets' lead to 38-24 with 15:53 to play.

A jump shot by Michelle Boeder (Jr. • Oshkosh) cut UW-Oshkosh's deficit to 39-28, but UW-Superior answered with an 11-2 scoring run to take a 50-30 advantage with 9:52 left. The Yellowjackets held a lead of at least 13 points for the remainder of the game.

UW-Oshkosh, which committed a season-low 11 turnovers, was paced by the 13 points, four rebounds and four assists of Boeder. The Titans also received nine points from Ebbens, six points and nine rebounds from Heidi Baerenwald (So. • Appleton) and four points and 12 rebounds from Churchill.

Hart, Urmanski and Kailee McDonald scored 10 points each to lead UW-Superior. Hart also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds while Kelsey Thingvold added seven points and six rebounds. The Yellowjackets turned the basketball over 13 times.
