Pioneers Move Past Titans

Carroll University staged a 12-4 scoring run early in the second half to take control and defeat the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team, 68-61, on Thursday (Nov. 19) in Waukesha.

The loss spoiled another big night for Heidi Baerenwald (So. • Appleton), who tallied 14 points and nine rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh (1-1) also received nine points and five assists from Laura Ebbens (Jr. • Appleton) and seven points along with 12 rebounds from Shelby Churchill (Jr. • Sheboygan).
The Titans tied the game early in the second half at 39 with two free throws from Baerenwald, but a basket from Janelle Groer and a three-point play by Karen Hoewisch gave the Pioneers a five-point lead with 17:50 left.

Soon after, lay-ups from Michelle Boeder (Jr. • Oshkosh) and Baerenwald pulled the Titans to within one at 44-43. The Pioneers (1-1) outscored the Titans, 9-2, during the next four minutes to take an eight-point lead. Carroll University then controlled the remainder of the contest in earning their second win in the last three meetings with UW-Oshkosh.

Carroll University jumped out to an early 9-1 lead with 17:32 remaining in the first half, featuring a three-pointer by Lyndsey Seewald just 28 seconds into play. The Titans answered with a 15-7 scoring streak, including five points from Baerenwald, that ended with a lay-up by Ashley Winterfeldt (Fr. • Hortonville) to tie the game at 16 with 13:18 left in the opening half.

Carroll University led by as many as five points during the next eight minutes, but UW-Oshkosh responded to take its first lead at 31-30 with 5:27 left, thanks to a Melissa Franken (Fr. • St. Francis) three-pointer. The two teams traded baskets for a short stretch, but Carroll University tallied nine of the last 13 points to earn a 39-35 halftime advantage.

In the second half, the Pioneers took their largest lead of 10 points with 7:26 left in the game thanks to a lay-up from Megan Turckes that rolled into the basket. UW-Oshkosh pulled to within five (59-54) with 4:41 remaining, but the Pioneers then built an 11-point lead to put the game out of reach.

Seewald led Carroll University with 16 points, while Hoewisch had 14 points. Groer and Melissa Haug rounded out the offensive leaders with 11 points each, as Groer also posted seven rebounds and five steals.

UW-Oshkosh shot 41.4 percent (24-58) from the field and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the free throw line. The Titans shot 25 percent (2-8) from three-point range while committing 24 turnovers.

Carroll University made 36.4 percent (24-66) of its field goal attempts and 13-of-19 (68.4 percent) free throws. The Pioneers shot 41.2 percent (7-17) behind the three-point arc and committed 12 turnovers.
