Blue Devils Spear Titans

UW-Stout had three players score in double figures to record an 82-62 win over the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team on Saturday (Feb. 6) in Menomonie.

Julia Hirssig led the way for UW-Stout (13-9/8-5 WIAC), marking 17 of her 21 points in the second half on her way to becoming the school's all-time leading scorer (1,622). She also collected 11 rebounds, as Blue Devils received 16 points and three blocks from Kim Stokke and 10 points from Danielle DeWitt.

UW-Oshkosh (7-15/2-11 WIAC) was led by 18 points from Katie Kitzke (Fr. • South Milwaukee). Ashley Winterfeldt (Fr. • Hortonville) tallied 10 points, while Shelby Churchill (Jr. • Sheboygan) snatched eight rebounds and Megan Wenig (Fr. • Oshkosh) collected seven boards and served up three assists.

UW-Stout held an 8-4 advantage at the 15:07 mark of the first half when Winterfeldt knocked down a trey, pulling the Titans within one (8-7). After DeWitt extended the cushion to three, the Titans stormed back and tied the game at 10 with two free throws from Kitzke with 12:21 on the clock.

Laura Ebbens (Jr. • Appleton) converted a three-point play for a 13-12 lead. UW-Stout then went on a 12-2 scoring run, capped by consecutive three-pointers from Kimmy Keehr and DeWitt for a 24-15 advantage at the 5:44 mark.

The Blue Devils led by as many as 13 points before halftime until Kitzke swished a three-pointer with 18 seconds left, cutting the Titans' deficit to 32-22.

UW-Stout built its advantage to 14 points early in the second half and held a 13-point cushion when Wenig made a lay-up and a long jumper to pull the Titans within eight (41-33).

Hirssig scored the Blue Devils' next seven points, making a lay-up with 13:23 left for a 48-36 advantage. Michelle Boeder (Jr. • Oshkosh) then hit a jumper and Kitzke swished a long three-pointer to cut the Titans' deficit to 48-41.

After DeWitt and Hirssig built the lead back to 10, two foul shots from Winterfeldt and a jumper from Boeder brought the Titans within six (51-45). The Blue Devils scored the game's next 10 points, taking a 61-45 advantage with 8:34 remaining on a lay-up from Hirssig.

The Titans were as close as 14 points (63-49) when Boeder made two free throws with 7:27 to go. The Blue Devils extended the lead back to 23 points (72-49) on a jumper from Stokke with 4:58 remaining.

UW-Stout's lead never fell below 18 points during the final three minutes of play. Amy VanHulsen and Alisha Todd swished back-to-back jumpers with just over a minute left for an 80-58 cushion.

UW-Stout shot 47.8 percent (33-69) from the field and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the free-throw stripe. The Blue Devils made 5-of-18 three-pointers (27.8 percent), gathered 34 rebounds and committed seven turnovers.

UW-Oshkosh posted shooting marks of 35.7 percent (20-56) from the field, 50 percent (4-8) behind the three-point line and 72 percent (18-25) from the charity stripe. The Titans gathered 38 rebounds and committed 17 turnovers.

UW-Oshkosh returns home to host UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Feb. 10).
