Titans Open THE Spring Games With Pair Of Wins

CLERMONT, Fla.- After getting rained out on Friday (March 23), the UW-Oshkosh softball team started THE Spring Games with wins over Amherst College (Mass.) and Buffalo State College (N.Y.)  at Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont, Fla.

The Titans (10-0) defeated the Mammoths (3-7) in six innings by a score of 9-0 to open the day.

Haylie Wittman (So. • Kaukauna) hit Oshkosh's first home run of the season in the top of the second inning with a solo shot to left field.

The score remained at 1-0 until the fifth inning when the Titans increased their lead by six runs on two hits, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly. Morgan Rau (Sr. • Downers Grove, Ill.) sent Lizzie Slobodecki (Jr. • Carol Stream, Ill.) home on a fielder's choice, followed immediately by a two-run double by Brianna Davis (Jr. • Oshkosh) which scored both Rau and Sophie Wery (Jr. • Seymour). After Davis stole third and Morgan Miller (So. • Schaumburg, Ill.) reach on a walk, Wittman hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Davis and making the score 5-0. Hannah Ritter (Sr. • Marengo, Ill.), who led off the inning with a single, singled again and advanced to second on the throw which Abby Garceau (Jr. • Michicot) and Cali Divito (Jr. • Inverness, Ill.) recorded runs on.

Wittman and Sarah Hammerton (Fr. • Appleton) recorded the final two RBIs in the top of the sixth. Wittman scored Davis on a fielder's choice and Hammerton tripled to right center, sending Wittman across the plate.

In the pitcher's circle, Sydney Nemetz (Jr. • Marinette) turned in a dominant complete game shutout of Amherst, striking out seven batters, while allowing just two hits. She is now 5-0 this season.

Mia Crotty (Sr. • Palos Park, Ill.) started in the circle for the Titans in their second game of the day against Buffalo State. She threw 1.1 innings, allowing five runs on four hits.

Oshkosh struck first against the Bengals (4-6) in the bottom of the first inning. Hammerton hit her second triple of the day, scoring Garceau who reached on a single to the shortstop. After Ritter walked, Wery tripled to left center, netting two RBI. Davis made the score 4-0 on a groundout to short that Wery ran home on.

Buffalo State scored on two bases loaded singles before Crotty was relieved by Abby Freismuth (Sr. • Fond du Lac). The Bengals scored on a single before the batter was caught in a pickle followed by a two-run single up the middle. Crotty ended the inning the following at-bat on a looking strikeout.

Neither team scored again until Wittman hit a single to left field in the fifth inning, which sent Davis across the plate. Ritter notched her third RBI of the day in the following inning, doubling to center and scoring Hammerton who reached base on a single to left.

Brianna Bougie (Fr. • Oshkosh) pitched the final two innings after Freismuth threw 3.2 innings of scoreless work with two strikeouts. Bougie earned her first win of the season on one hit and two walks with a strikeout against the first batter she faced.

The Titans return to action Monday, March 25 for games against Union College (N.Y.) (0-3) at 11:30 a.m. and Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) (4-6) at 1:45 p.m. central time.
