Eagles, Titans Trade Tight Victories

Both games came down to the final pitch, as UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse split a softball doubleheader on Saturday (April 27) in La Crosse.

Jill Vondrak (Jr. • Westchester, Ill.) came through with a two-out, two-run single that gave the Titans a 3-2 victory in game one. UW-La Crosse then had a three-run fifth inning and held on for a 3-2 nightcap decision.

UW-Oshkosh (21-7) moved atop the WIAC standings with its 8-2 record. UW-Whitewater sits in second place at 10-3, while UW-Eau Claire is third at 9-3.

The first batter of the day was Hayden Krueger (Fr. • Bristol). She lifted a solo shot to right-centerfield for a 1-0 lead. It was Krueger's fifth homer in the past week.

The Eagles (18-13/5-8 WIAC) tied the score during the second inning on a RBI single from Emily Holldorf. The tie remained until the sixth, when Mary Kate Prior connected for a home run to go up, 2-1.

UW-Oshkosh's seventh inning started with single by Kaelyn Hogan (Sr. • Greendale) and a walk from Kassie Krueger (Jr. • Plover). Down to their last out, the Titans went ahead with Vondrak's two-run single up the middle.

Courtney Wautier (Sr. • Brussels) put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but was able to close out the complete game. She allowed two runs on eight hits. Lauren Beres took the loss after yielding three runs on five hits with six strikeouts.

The second game was a similar low-scoring affair. UW-Oshkosh struck first with a RBI single from Tess Fadness (Jr. • Eau Claire) in the opening frame.

After four quiet innings, the Eagles struck three times with two outs in the fifth. Alecia Faber put her team on the board with a two-run single. Katie Fink followed with a RBI single to make it 3-1.

A sixth-inning error and Vondrak's run-scoring single pulled the Titans within one. During the seventh, UW-Oshkosh loaded the bases before Fadness popped out to end the game.

Heather Grelle earned her third win with six innings and one earned run. Megan Nelson posted the save after throwing one scoreless frame. The loss went to Vondrak, who allowed two ER over six innings.

UW-Oshkosh travels to UW-Stout for a doubleheader on Sunday (April 28).
