Titans Open Season With Split Decisions

Lindsey Luedke (Fr. • Howard) homered twice in her first collegiate game as UW-Oshkosh opened its 2013 softball season by splitting a pair of contests on Saturday (Feb. 23) in Marquette, Mich.

UW-Oshkosh scored six unearned runs in the sixth inning to defeat Hope College (Mich.), 9-5, before allowing 14 hits in an 11-0 loss to Simpson College (Iowa).

In the opener, Laura Tjepkema smashed a first-inning, three-run home run to give Hope College (0-1) the early lead. UW-Oshkosh got two of those runs back in the second inning as Luedke belted a solo home run and Kassie Krueger laced a run-scoring single.

The Flying Dutch increased their advantage to 5-2 before the Titans scored on a single by Tess Fadness (Jr. • Eau Claire) in the fourth inning.

Courtesy of a Hope College error, UW-Oshkosh rallied for six runs in the sixth inning. Hayden Krueger (Fr. • Bristol), Fadness and Hillary Trebiatowski (Sr. • Plover) each had run-scoring hits while Luedke scored two with a home run.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 11 hits, including two each by Fadness, Luedke, Kaelyn Hogan (Sr. • Greendale), Hayden Krueger and Kassie Krueger (Jr. • Plover).

Courtney Wautier (Sr. • Brussels) went the distance for the Titans. She allowed six hits and five earned runs while striking out six batters.

Hope College compiled six hits, with two apiece from Jen Buckingham and Emma Page. Kate Laverty yielded 11 hits and took the pitching loss despite allowing just two earned runs.

In the nightcap, Simpson College (1-0) overwhelmed UW-Oshkosh by scoring five times in the first inning, three in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth.

The Storm hit four homers, including a grand slam in the first inning and a solo shot in the fourth by Kylie Van Houten. Hailey Jensen hit a two-run shot in the second inning and Ashley Prettyman smacked a solo homer in the third.

Simpson College recorded 14 hits, including three each by Van Houten and Chelsea Winegard. Van Houten finished the contest with five RBI.

UW-Oshkosh was held to just five hits and only five base runners. All five hits were singles, including two by Fadness.

Demi McAlpin (Fr. • Portage) started on the mound for the Titans and surrendered eight runs and eight hits in 1.2 innings. Melissa Gutsmiedl (Fr. • Winneconne) then allowed three runs and six hits in 2.1 frames.

Kacee Arey struck out four batters and pitched a five-hit shutout for Simpson College.

UW-Oshkosh remains in Marquette to play games against the University of Dubuque (Iowa) and Loras College (Iowa) on Sunday (Feb. 24).
