Titans Fall To Rams, Gusties In Late Innings

Emily Mallek (Fr. • Plover) led UW-Oshkosh with three hits during softball defeats to Cornell College (Iowa) and Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) on Saturday (March 31) in Moline, Ill.

Cornell (11-4) tallied all of its runs during the fifth and sixth frames to top the Titans, 6-4. After seven scoreless innings, the Gusties (7-5) used Kailey Morgan's single in the eighth to grab a 1-0 walk-off victory.

Julie Sweeney (Fr. • Arlington Heights, Ill.) crushed a third-inning homer against Cornell for a 1-0 lead. UW-Oshkosh (10-6) then gained its second and third runs on a Julia Burns (Sr. • Verona) single in the fifth frame.

The Rams used two singles to set up Rebekah Ozga's two-run double during the fifth. With the game tied at 3 in the sixth, Jackie Sernek delivered a RBI single to right-center. Britt Schoon then put it out of reach with a two-run shot to lead, 6-3.

Katie Koepsel (Fr. • Oak Creek) marked a RBI single during the seventh, but the Titans stranded the bases loaded. Kimberly Lohre (Fr. • Glenview, Ill.) took the loss after two innings with three earned runs, while Sweeney started and allowed three ER in five frames.

Cornell took advantage of Schoon's 3-for-3 game at the plate. Jill Trzaska fired all seven innings for the win, yielding four ER on eight hits and six walks.

UW-Oshkosh's best chance to score against the Gusties was when it had runners on second and third base with nobody out during the third. The Titans struck out and grounded out twice to keep it a 0-0 ballgame.

Gustavus Adolphus posted two singles in the third, but Courtney Wautier (Jr. • Brussels) kept the tie intact. Wautier surrendered just three hits in her six frames for the no-decision.

During the eighth, the Titans reached third base with no outs. Kate Rentschler retired the next three batters to send her teammates back to the plate. Following a single by Brittany Brenke, Morgan ripped a hit to right field that ended the contest.

Sweeney accepted the loss, giving up one unearned run in one frame. Rentschler threw all eight innings and struck out three for the win.

UW-Oshkosh stays in Moline for games against Wartburg College (Iowa) and Augustana College (Ill.) on Sunday (April 1).
