Titans Get Even With Eighth-Ranked Warhawks

Courtney Wautier's (So. • Brussels) fourth career shutout and Jessica Stang's 11-strikeout win were the pitching gems as UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater split a women's softball doubleheader on Wednesday (April 13) at YP.com Softball Park.

The Warhawks (20-6/5-3 WIAC), ranked eighth by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, methodically chipped away for an 8-1 victory in game one. Wautier did not walk a batter while fanning four as the Titans snatched the nightcap, 5-0.

UW-Whitewater obtained a quick 5-0 lead after scoring in the first three innings of the opener. The run-scoring hits were provided by Jordyn Gaza, Haley Krueger and Lauren Rankins. UW-Oshkosh (16-8/3-3 WIAC) got on the board during the third when Sydnee Wyss (Sr. • Monroe) doubled and scored on a groundout.

A two-run bomb by Emily Epifanio in the fourth frame put her team ahead, 7-1. Laura Eichenold later tacked on an RBI double during the sixth. The Warhawks compiled 13 hits, including three by Epifanio.

Stang pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits in her 15th win of the year. Tatum Schultz (So. • Oshkosh) took the defeat after surrendering five earned runs over 2.1 frames. Getting the final eight outs, Demi Kastein (Fr. • Waupun) yielded one ER.

The Titans' offense wasted no time in the nightcap, posting two runs in both the first and third frames. The opening-inning scores came on a Tess Fadness (Fr. • Eau Claire) single to right field. Following a solo home run by Hayley Freimuth (Jr. • Combined Locks) during the second, Kastein bumped the lead to 5-0 with her two-run single in the third.

UW-Oshkosh didn't get any hits after that, but it was enough thanks to two-hit games by Fadness and Jamie Braden (Sr. • Lake Villa, Ill.). The Warhawks booked two hits in both the fourth and sixth frames, but groundouts ended any scoring threat.

Amanda Ramirez went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead UW-Whitewater. The loss fell on Katie Boyle, who allowed five ER while hurling all six innings.

The Titans' next challenge is a pair of games at UW-La Crosse (16-9) on Saturday (April 16).
