Titans Settle For One Of Two Games Again

UW-Oshkosh scored its last 12 runs with two outs as it dropped a close game and posted a convincing women's softball victory on Saturday (April 9) in Bloomington, Ill. It was the fifth consecutive doubleheader that the Titans split.

Washington University (Mo.) got a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts by Claire Voris to top the Titans in the opener, 4-1. UW-Oshkosh (14-6) bounced back in a big way, notching a seven-run frame and a five-run inning to defeat Calvin College (Mich.) by a 12-2 final.

In game one, the Titans got a leadoff walk to set up Jamie Braden's (Sr. • Lake Villa, Ill.) run-scoring single. UW-Oshkosh's only other hit came during the sixth, when Kaelyn Hogan (So. • Greendale) singled to left field.

Kelsey Neal did the early damage for the Bears (21-7-1), blasting a solo homer in the fifth and a run-scoring single during the sixth. Washington University didn't stop after gaining its 2-1 cushion. Alex Fjeldheim came up next and delivered a two-run double to put the game away.

Both pitchers went the distance, as Voris improved to 9-3 with seven dominant innings. Courtney Wautier (So. • Brussels) lost after surrendering four earned runs on 11 hits. The Bears were led by two-hit games from Neal, Ally Berenter and Corissa Santos.

The Titans' first two batters were retired in the second inning of game two. From there, Marti Meyer (Jr. • Verona) laced a two-run double and run-scoring singles were added by Braden, Hogan and Sydnee Wyss (Sr. • Monroe).

During the fourth frame, the Knights (4-16) got their only scoring on a two-run homer by Marie Prins. Calvin College booked just one hit over the last four innings against Tatum Schultz (So. • Oshkosh), who earned the win. Elizabeth Greatens (Fr. • Green Bay) started and tossed three innings of two-run ball.

Tess Fadness (Fr. • Eau Claire) began the seventh with a walk, and she later tacked on a run-scoring single. In between, UW-Oshkosh marked six times, including twice on a Meyer base knock. The Titans finished with 14 hits, paced by the three of both Wyss and Hogan.

The loss fell on Lina Avila after she surrendered five ER while getting five outs. Shelby Mast completed the remaining 5.1 frames, striking out six and watching seven unearned runs cross the plate.

UW-Oshkosh is ready for its home opener against UW-Superior (15-9) on Monday (April 11).
