Seventh-Inning Scores Lift Titans To Sweep Of Pointers

UW-Oshkosh scored five runs with two outs during its final at-bats to steal a pair of women's softball victories against UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday (April 27) at YP.com Softball Park.

In the opener, Julia Burns (Jr. • Verona) delivered a tiebreaking single during the seventh to gain a 4-3 win. The Titans (20-10/5-5 WIAC) evened the score and then went ahead with walks to take a 9-6 decision in the nightcap. Those results gave UW-Oshkosh 11 consecutive wins over the Pointers (19-15/4-10 WIAC).

Game one was a back-and-forth affair that began with Katie Krueger's two-run homer in the third inning. UW-Oshkosh then rallied during the fifth with run-scoring singles by Sydnee Wyss (Sr. • Monroe), Kelly Koebler (Jr. • Janesville) and Jamie Braden (Sr. • Lake Villa, Ill.) to go ahead, 3-2.

The Pointers equaled the score in the bottom of the fifth on an Elyse Nelson single to right field. Nelson paced her squad with three hits in the game as UW-Stevens Point marked eight and UW-Oshkosh nine.

Both pitchers went the distance, with Courtney Wautier (So. • Brussels) allowing two earned runs for the victory. Sara Babbitts surrendered four ER on nine hits to take the defeat.

Burns made it two consecutive at-bats with an RBI as she doubled home Wyss in the nightcap's first frame. The Titans extended that cushion with three consecutive run-scoring doubles, courtesy of Braden, Burns and Fadness, to make it 4-0 in the third inning.

The Pointers crept closer with one run in the third before notching a quick five-spot in the fifth. That momentum-snatching frame began with a two-run homer by Sarah Butts. Following a walk and a single, Megan Tracy connected for a three-run homer to grab the 6-4 advantage.

Burns smacked her third double of the contest to begin the Titans' huge seventh inning. A pinch-hit single by Hayley Freimuth shrunk the deficit to 6-5. Wyss and Koebler then each drew a base-on-balls to put UW-Oshkosh ahead. Braden added the exclamation point with a two-run single to center for the final tally.

Wautier earned the rare two-win day after she tossed the final three innings and allowed two ER. Tatum Schultz (So. • Oshkosh) started for UW-Oshkosh and surrendered three runs over four frames. The Pointers' Michelle Jones (loss) yielded eight runs on 12 hits in 6.1 innings.

The Titans continue their busy week with a doubleheader at UW-La Crosse on Thursday (April 28).
