Titans, Fighting Scots Play To A Draw

Courtney Wautier (So. • Brussels) threw nine outstanding innings to help UW-Oshkosh capture one game of a women's softball doubleheader against The College of Wooster (Ohio) on Wednesday (March 23) in Cape Coral, Fla.

The opener featured seven strong frames and 12 strikeouts by Wautier as the Titans prevailed, 3-1. The Fighting Scots (8-8) overcame a 4-0 deficit to steal the second contest by a 5-4 count. UW-Oshkosh (10-2) had a 10-game win streak – its longest since 2007 – come to an end.

Neither team got on the board early, with the Titans' first hit of the opener coming in the fourth frame. Jamie Braden (Sr. • Lake Villa, Ill.) made it count by sending a ball over the left-field fence. Braden accounted for her team's other RBI when she singled during the sixth inning.

UW-Oshkosh's second run came on a Wooster throwing error in the fifth. The Fighting Scots turned a leadoff walk into their lone tally during the seventh inning. With nobody out, Caitlin Gaffney pounded a double to drive in Kasie Fagan and make it 3-1.

Wautier fired the complete game, surrendering just four hits and one walk. The loss went to Jenn Horton, who pitched six innings of four-hit ball with two earned runs.

The nightcap had more action, with each team totaling four runs in a two-inning span. Tess Fadness (Fr. • Eau Claire) singled during both the second and third frames. One of those rips drove in a run, while the Titans obtained a 4-0 advantage on hits by Hayley Freimuth (Jr. • Combined Locks) and Julia Burns (Jr. • Verona).

A single and fielding error allowed Wooster to creep closer in the third. Kelley Johnson bashed one of her two base hits to plate a run. The Fighting Scots then made it a 4-3 contest when Horton and Danielle Grooms notched back-to-back RBI doubles during the fourth frame.

Johnson opened the fifth with a double and tied the contest on a wild pitch. Two walks helped set up Gina Pirlozzi, who lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home the winning score. UW-Oshkosh, facing the Fighting Scots for the first time, went 1-2-3 in the seventh to drop the game.

Pirlozzi was the star on the rubber, firing four shutout innings with five strikeouts to earn the win. Allie Webb started for Wooster and allowed four runs in three frames. Elizabeth Greatens (Fr. • Green Bay) took the loss after yielding two runs and getting two outs. The Titan starter, Tatum Schultz (So. • Oshkosh), was charged with two ER over 3.1 innings.

UW-Oshkosh concludes it southern trip with two games against St. Thomas University (Fla.) on Saturday (March 26) in Fort Myers, Fla.
