Titans, Blue Devils Each Mark A Convincing Win

UW-Oshkosh posted an eight-run inning and a season-high 19 hits in the opener as it took 1-of-2 women's softball games with UW-Stout on Sunday (May 1) in Menomonie.

Jamie Braden (Sr. • Lake Villa, Ill.) had four hits and Kaelyn Hogan (So. • Greendale) four runs batted in as the Titans put together a 17-8 victory in game one. Tara Kimberly didn't allow an earned run over six frames as she helped UW-Stout bounce back with a 9-1 decision during the second contest.

Jumping to a 9-2 lead, the Titans (21-13/6-8 WIAC) dominated the opener after scoring four times in the first inning. Hogan knocked in a pair with a double after Braden's double put UW-Oshkosh in front. During the second frame, both Marti Meyer (Jr. • Verona) and Sydnee Wyss (Sr. • Monroe) stole home to make it 6-2.

UW-Stout (16-20/3-11 WIAC) showed some offense with three runs in the seventh and two in both the first and fifth innings. Hannah Sweet counted a two-run double in the opening frame, while Shanen Stainer hit a two-run triple during the final at-bat.

Eight consecutive Titans reached base after there were two outs in the seventh. Braden, Fadness and Julia Burns (Jr. • Verona) each recorded a RBI single before Hogan drove home two with a base hit. UW-Oshkosh then capped the eight-hit frame with a Michelle Zick (Fr. • Rosholt) run-scoring single and Meyer's two-run double to right field.

En route to their highest scoring total of the year, the Titans had six players with multiple hits. Wyss touched the plate four times as 11 different players scored a run. Courtney Wautier (So. • Brussels) took the win, allowing four earned runs with five strikeouts in six frames.

Kelly Conway totaled three of UW-Stout's 13 hits. The loss went to Tara Kimberly, who yielded seven runs (3 ER) after 1.2 innings. Brittany Reiter tossed the last four frames and surrendered nine runs on 11 hits.

The nightcap belonged to the Blue Devils, as they took a 5-0 lead in the second. Stainer and Sweet both notched a run-scoring single to go in front. After a single and error in the second frame, Stainer roped a two-run double to earn the substantial cushion.

UW-Oshkosh got one hit in every frame after the second inning. The only score came when Fadness punched a RBI double to right field during the fourth. Braden and Wyss each marked two of the Titans' five hits in the game. Wautier took the loss, surrendering five ER on 12 hits in five frames.

The doubleheader concluded when UW-Stout got on the board three times during the sixth. Two of those were on sacrifice flies, while Sammy Peterson booked a run-scoring single. The Blue Devils compiled 12 hits, including three by Stainer (four RBI).

The Titans are set for the conference finale when they travel to UW-River Falls on Tuesday (May 3). The Falcons (11-3 WIAC) have already claimed a share of the league championship.
