Titans, Pioneers Share Low-Scoring Twinbill

Tatum Schultz (So. • Oshkosh) fired 3.2 scoreless innings to give UW-Oshkosh one win over UW-Platteville in a women's softball doubleheader on Saturday (April 2) in Platteville.

Melissa Anderson threw a complete game to give the Pioneers a 3-0 victory in the first contest. The Titans (12-4/1-1 WIAC) used a clutch two-run single by Sydnee Wyss (Sr. • Monroe) and Schultz's relief effort to take the nightcap by a 4-1 tally.

UW-Oshkosh was unable to score in its conference opener, notching just a single hit during the odd-numbered innings. Anderson didn't walk a batter in forcing 12 groundouts over her seven innings.

The Pioneers (7-9/1-1 WIAC) put up their runs in the fifth frame, which began with a pair of singles. Chantal McReynolds ripped a double in the outfield gap to score a pair. With one out, Jordan Johnson snuck a run-scoring single up the middle to obtain the 3-0 cushion.

Courtney Wautier (So. • Brussels) took the loss, allowing three earned runs while striking out seven in six frames. UW-Platteville totaled nine base hits, including two apiece by McReynolds, Brittany Caley and Colleen Lowe.

The Titans finally got on the scoreboard in the opening inning of game two. An error and passed ball moved Wyss into scoring position. She then touched the plate on a wild pitch. During the fourth, UW-Platteville tied the score after Nathalie Schattner tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom half, UW-Oshkosh had the lead runner thrown out at home. Wyss came up next and laced her two-run single to go in front for good. The Titans added consecutive walks, including a run batted in by Jamie Braden (Sr. • Lake Villa, Ill.), to complete the scoring.

Elizabeth Greatens (Fr. • Green Bay) started for UW-Oshkosh and yielded one run in 3.1 innings. The Pioneer starter, Jeni Freiburger, took the loss after letting in two earned runs over 3.2 frames. Anderson recorded the last seven outs and did not allow a base runner.

Wyss had a pair of hits in each game, extending her hitting streak to 16 contests. The Titans tallied their four runs on four hits in game two, while UW-Platteville was only able to muster one run on six hits.

UW-Oshkosh's next scheduled action is against Illinois Wesleyan University and Calvin College (Mich.) on April 8 in Bloomington, Ill.
