Titans Post Mixed Results

Julia Burns (Jr. • Verona) belted her first two home runs of the season to lead UW-Oshkosh's win during a women's softball doubleheader on Friday (April 8) in Bloomington, Ill.

The Titans (13-5) posted a 7-4 victory against Calvin College (Mich.) thanks to two solo homers and a two-run double from Burns. In the first game of the day, a pair of solo home runs by Illinois Wesleyan University (13-4) sent UW-Oshkosh to a 2-1 defeat. Illinois Wesleyan entered the game ranked 21st in the NFCA's NCAA Division III poll.

After the first two batters of the opener failed to reach base, Emma Clark clobbered a ball over the fence to take the lead. The fifth inning saw Illinois Wesleyan force a play at the plate, but Stephanie Polich was denied of the lead. Kaity Crane, the designated hitter, did her job in the sixth inning when she delivered the winning run on a solo shot.

UW-Oshkosh got all of its production after there were two outs in the fifth frame. Marti Meyer (Jr. • Verona) and Sydnee Wyss (Sr. • Monroe) each singled. Kaelyn Hogan (So. • Greendale) then made it three in a row with a single to equal the score at 1.

Alyssa Vorel sent down the Titans in order during the seventh to capture her fourth victory of the year. She struck out six while allowing six base runners in the complete game. Courtney Wautier (So. • Brussels) also fired the entire contest, surrendering seven hits over six frames.

During the nightcap, Burns put UW-Oshkosh in front right away with a first-inning double. She tacked on her solo blasts in the third and fifth frames to put the Titans ahead, 6-1. The other scoring came during the second, when Jamie Braden (Sr. • Lake Villa, Ill.) roped a two-run double to left field.

The Knights (4-13) also utilized the long ball, as homers accounted for all of their runs. During the fourth frame, Marie Prins opened with a round-tripper to left. Lina Avila's three-run bomb in the sixth inning was set up by two Titan errors and a walk.

Tatum Schultz (So. • Oshkosh) gave up just four hits, earning the win with four strikeouts in six innings. Wautier was awarded the save after fanning all three batters she faced. On the losing end was Shelby Mast, who tossed six innings and allowed six earned runs.

The Titans' eight hits came from four players, as Burns led the way with three base knocks and four RBI. Meyer and Wyss each recorded two hits and two runs scored.

UW-Oshkosh will face Calvin College again, in addition to Washington University (Mo.), on Saturday (April 9) in Bloomington.
