Warhawks Knock Titans Out Of WIAC Tournament

Jessica Stang tossed a one-hit shutout as UW-Whitewater ended UW-Oshkosh's season with a five-inning, 8-0 victory in the WIAC Women's Softball Tournament on Sunday (May 9) in Oshkosh.

Amanda Mertes tallied first for the Warhawks (31-15), scoring on a fielding error by the Titans in the opening frame. With two runners on and two outs in the inning, Kate McDonnell blasted a three-run homer for a 4-0 advantage.

UW-Whitewater extended its cushion to 5-0 in the second inning with a sacrifice fly from Amanda LeBeau.

Shauna Binsfeld marked on a fielder's choice to begin the third frame for the Warhawks. Run-scoring singles from Courtney Baldwin and LeBeau closed out the inning and created the final tally.

The Titans (22-21) notched their only hit of the contest in the top half of the fourth, when Amie Heinzelman (Sr. • Monroe) smashed a base hit to right field.

The Warhawks tallied six hits in the contest, led by two apiece from Baldwin and Mertes. Stang tossed all five frames for UW-Whitewater, allowing one hit and striking out three batters.

The pitching loss fell on Courtney Wautier (Fr. • Brussels), who surrendered four runs on two hits while retiring two batters. Ashley Kowalewski (So. • Greenfield) allowed four runs and three hits in the next 1.2 frames and Tatum Schultz (Fr. • Oshkosh) fired the final 1.2 innings for the Titans.
