Titans Return Home To Collar Pointers

Amie Heinzelman (Sr. • Monroe) brought home seven runs while Sydnee Wyss (Jr. • Monroe) recorded six hits in leading the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team to two wins over UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday (April 28) at the Oshkosh Sports Complex. The contests were the first at home for the Titans after 16 straight road games.

The Titans (18-18/6-6 WIAC) took game one, 9-6, after Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) belted a two-run home run to break open a tie game. The Pointers (20-18/4-12 WIAC) surrendered 13 hits, including five to Wyss, during a 15-6 loss in game two.

In game one, Hayley Freimuth (So. • Combined Locks) blasted a two-run double and later marked when Julia Burns (So. • Verona) reached on a Pointers' error in the first inning for a 3-0 Titan lead.

After UW-Stevens Point tallied with a run-scoring single from Lauren Watkins in the top half of the third, Lindsey Mikulecky (Fr. • Union Grove) slammed a two-run base hit to round out the third frame. Burns drew a bases-loaded walk to cap the fourth for UW-Oshkosh.

The Pointers then knotted the game at 6 thanks to an RBI hit by Sarah Butts and a grand slam from Watkins in the fifth inning. Tornow's two-run blast in the bottom of the fifth re-gained the lead for the Titans at 8-6.

Kelley Koebler (So. • Janesville) drilled a run-scoring hit in the sixth and Wautier retired the Pointers in order to preserve the final count.

Ashley Kowalewski (So. • Greenfield) pitched the first four innings for the Titans, allowing six runs on five hits. The win belonged to Courtney Wautier (Fr. • Brussels), who did not surrender a hit in three frames.

Michelle Jones tossed three innings for UW-Stevens Point, giving up five runs and seven hits. Cassie Krum took the loss, yielding three runs on three hits in 1.2 frames. Elyse Nelson tossed the final 1.1 innings for the Pointers.

UW-Oshkosh notched 11 hits in the contest, led by two each from Tornow and Marti Meyer (So. • Verona). The Pointers tallied five hits, featuring two from Watkins.

Consecutive run-scoring singles from Melissa Wenig and Megan Tracey gave UW-Stevens Point a 2-0 advantage in the first frame of the nightcap.

The Titans gained a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the first with a two-run double from Heinzelman (Sr. • Monroe) and a single smash from Freimuth. RBI singles from Heinzelman in the second and third innings, paired with a two-run hit by Meyer in the second, extended the UW-Oshkosh cushion to 8-2.

Brittany Roen (Fr. • Beaver Dam) and Burns marked, while Wyss slammed a run-scoring single and stole home in the fourth inning to up the advantage to 12-2.

A tally from Nicole Henke, along with a two-run hit from Wenig and an infield single by Tracey, cut the Pointers' deficit in half during the fifth frame. Wyss scored on a wild pitch and Heinzelman blasted a two-run shot to left during the sixth to close out the victory.

Wautier earned her second triumph of the day, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits. Kowalewski posted the final out for the Titans.

Chelsea Hensler took the loss for the Pointers, pitching one inning while surrendering five runs and five hits. Jones tossed the next two frames, allowing six runs and five hits, before Krum allowed one run in an inning of work. Nelson pitched the last 1.2 frames for UW-Stevens Point.

UW-Oshkosh had 13 hits in game two, led by five from Wyss, three from Heinzelman and two apiece by Meyer and Burns. The Pointers notched eight hits, receiving two each from Butts, Wenig and Kelly Arndt.
