Titans Bested By Blugolds, Capture Falcons In WIAC Tournament

UW-Oshkosh used a six-run fourth frame against UW-River Falls to win one of two contests and remain alive in the WIAC Softball Tournament on Saturday (May 8) at the Oshkosh Sports Complex.

The Titans (22-20) took an 8-7 loss to UW-Eau Claire in their first game before defeating UW-River Falls, 8-5, in the second contest. UW-Oshkosh will face UW-Whitewater in an elimination game on Sunday (May 9).

UW-Eau Claire (21-19) took the first contest in the seventh frame when Emily Haluska scored on an infield error by the Titans with the bases loaded. Ashley Kowalewski (So. • Greenfield) held UW-River Falls (24-16) to one run on four hits while fanning seven in game two for the victory.

The Blugolds struck first in game one when Emily Muller smacked a run-scoring single in the top of the first. With the bases loaded, Sara Baumgartner was hit by a pitch to score a run before Jenny Hess marked to end the frame.

Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) led off the fourth inning by knocking a base hit to left field and later scored on an error by the Blugolds. The Titans knotted the game at 3 with a two-run single from Lindsey Mickulecky (Fr. • Union Grove).

After Kaity Acker brought home a run in the fourth for a 4-3 UW-Eau Claire lead, Amie Heinzelman (Sr. • Monroe) blasted a run-scoring single to open the fifth frame. A two-run double by Lisa Hart (So. • Oshkosh) and a sacrifice fly from Hayley Freimuth (So. • Combined Locks) gave the Titans a 7-4 advantage.

With Nikki Bromelkamp and Tamara Zeman on base in the seventh frame, Jess Freagon slammed a pinch-hit home run to center field to even the tally at 7. With two runners on, Muller was intentionally walked and Haluska scored on a Titan error to end the contest.

Ashley Meinen tossed the opening four frames for the Blugolds, allowing three runs on three hits. The pitching victory belonged to Kassie Krummel, who gave up four runs and five hits in three innings.

Courtney Wautier (Fr. • Brussels) allowed three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings for the Titans. Kowalewski took the loss in the contest, surrendering five runs and eight hits in six innings.

The Titans totaled eight hits in the contest, led by Kelley Koebler (So. • Janesville) and Heinzelman with two apiece. UW-Eau Claire had 11 hits, receiving three from Katie Stalker and Baumgartner and two from Muller.

UW-Oshkosh opened game two with consecutive run-scoring hits from Hart and Freimuth in the top of the first frame. UW-River Falls responded with a two-RBI single from Sarah Fern and a two-run round-tripper by Ashley Goettl to earn a 4-2 advantage in the bottom half of the inning.

Sydnee Wyss (Jr. • Monroe) began the fourth frame with a two-run single to right field. With the bases loaded, Heinzelman drew a walk to tie the game at four. Run-scoring singles from Hart, Freimuth and Julia Burns (So. • Verona) closed out the inning and gave the Titans an 8-4 lead.

The Falcons added an RBI double from Goettl in the fifth, but Kowalewski allowed just two hits in the final frames to preserve the Titans' victory. Wautier pitched the first 2.1 frames for the Titans, allowing four runs on eight hits, while Kowalewski earned the victory in 4.2 innings.

Rose Tusa took the loss for the Falcons, giving up seven runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. Jamie Klein fired the final 3.2 innings, allowing one run and six hits.

UW-Oshkosh tallied 13 hits in the contest, receiving three from Freimuth and Hart and two apiece by Burns and Koebler. The Falcons notched 12 hits, led by three from Goettl.
