Titans Wallop Pioneers

Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) amassed six hits and blasted three home runs, including a grand slam in the second contest, to lead the UW-Oshkosh softball team to a sweep over UW-Platteville on Wednesday (April 21) in Platteville.

The Titans (14-16/2-4 WIAC) took game one, 11-9, in the 11th inning with Tornow's two-run home run and crushed the Pioneers (9-23/0-12 WIAC), 19-1, in game two after notching 12 runs in the opening frame.

UW-Platteville marked first in game one when Megan Pozezinski slammed a home run for a 2-0 advantage in the first inning. A run-scoring single from Tornow, followed by a triple from Lisa Hart (So. • Oshkosh), tied the game in the third. The Titans took a 3-2 lead when Julia Burns (So. • Verona) knocked in a run to end the inning.

UW-Oshkosh extended its cushion to 4-2 in the sixth inning, thanks to an RBI double from Hayley Freimuth (So. • Combined Locks). Run-scoring hits from Sydnee Wyss (Jr. • Monroe), Tornow and Hart during the seventh gave the Titans a 7-2 lead.

The Pioneers knotted the game in the bottom half, using a two-run blast from Meagan Bye. A three-run slam from Pozezinski then sent the game to extra innings.

Tornow gave the Titans a 9-7 cushion in the ninth inning with her two-run bomb to left field. Chantal McReynolds scored on a UW-Oshkosh error and Jordan Johnson brought in a run to knot the contest for UW-Platteville in the bottom half of the frame.

After the Pioneers tied the score in the ninth, Tornow gunned down a runner at the plate with a perfect throw to extend the contest. UW-Oshkosh then earned the victory in the 11th frame with Tornow's two-run slam to left field.

Ashley Kowalewski (So. • Greenfield) started for the Titans, pitching 6.2 innings while allowing seven runs and striking out seven. Tatum Schultz (Fr. • Oshkosh) pitched the next 1.1 innings, surrendering two runs and four hits. Courtney Wautier (Fr. • Brussels) earned the victory for UW-Oshkosh, tossing the final three innings and allowing one hit.

Melissa Anderson took the complete-game loss for the Pioneers, giving up 11 runs on 14 hits and striking out seven.

UW-Oshkosh tallied 12 runs on nine hits in the first inning of game two, including a run-scoring double from Tornow. RBI smashes from Freimuth, Jamie Braden (Jr. • Lake Villa, Ill.) and Kelley Koebler (So. • Janesville) contributed to a 7-0 cushion. The Titans earned the 12-0 advantage with two-run hits by Amie Heinzelman (Sr. • Monroe) and Burns to close out the top half of the first.

UW-Platteville marked its only run in the bottom of the first with a run-scoring single from Nathalie Schattner.

Amanda Schroeder (Fr. • Kaukauna), Freimuth and Burns each tallied a run to give the Titans a 15-1 lead during the third. With the bases loaded, Tornow slammed her third round-tripper to left field to create the game's final score. Wautier earned the complete-game win for UW-Oshkosh, allowing one run on four hits and striking out five.

Courtney Ryan took the loss for UW-Platteville, allowing 11 runs on eight hits after facing 11 batters in the first inning. Amber Bishop pitched the next 2.2 frames for the Pioneers, surrendering eight runs and six hits. Renee Schuttler tossed the final 2.1 innings for the Pioneers.

UW-Oshkosh notched 31 hits on the day, led by six from Tornow, five from Freimuth and four from Burns. UW-Platteville tallied 16 hits between the two contests, receiving three from McReynolds and two apiece by Pozezinski, Johnson and Whitney Foltz.
