Titans, Duhawks Exchange Pitching Gems

Michelle Sabatini tossed a no-hitter and Ashley Kowalewski (So. • Greenfield) recorded her second shutout of the year as Loras College (Iowa) and the UW-Oshkosh women's softball teams split a doubleheader on Sunday (April 18) in Dubuque, Iowa.

Sabatini did not allow a hit (three walks) in seven innings and struck out six to lead Loras College (13-12) to a 1-0 victory in game one. UW-Oshkosh (12-16) took the second contest, 9-0, after Kowalewski fanned seven batters in a complete-game four-hitter.

The Duhawks tallied the only run of the first contest on Niki Rivera's home run blast during the second frame. Kelsey Techlin accounted for Loras College's other hit in the game with her bunt single during the third.

Tatum Schultz (Fr. • Oshkosh) took the loss for the Titans, giving up one run on two hits while striking out two in six innings.

The Titans marked in the first inning of game two, using a run-scoring double from Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) and a run-scoring single from Julia Burns (So. • Verona) to take a 2-0 lead.

After Sydnee Wyss (Jr. • Monroe) knocked in another run with her smash in the second frame, UW-Oshkosh earned a 5-0 advantage during the fourth when Marti Meyer (So. • Verona) and Burns tallied on an error by Loras College. Amie Heinzelman (Sr. • Monroe) smashed a two-run double to left field to end the inning and extend the Titans' cushion to 7-0.

UW-Oshkosh tallied the final two runs of the contest in the seventh frame, with Amanda Schroeder (Fr. • Kaukauna) and Ashley-Amber Culver (Fr. • Beloit) each marking to create the game's final score.

Sabatini took the loss for Loras College, allowing three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. Kellie Klein tossed 4.1 innings for the Duhawks, surrendering four runs on six hits. Katelyn Jones pitched the final 1.1 frames, giving up two runs and walking five batters.

UW-Oshkosh had eight players notch a hit in the contest, led by Heinzelman with two. Tornow started a new hitting streak after seeing her 14-game string come to an end in the opener. Shelby Perkins tallied three of the Duhawks' four hits, with Techlin posting the other.
