Three Titans Named All-Region

Led by three-time honoree Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah), UW-Oshkosh placed three members on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's 2010 NCAA Division III All-Great Lakes Region Women's Softball Team.

Joining Tornow on the all-region squad were UW-Oshkosh teammates Amie Heinzelman (Sr. • Monroe) and Sydnee Wyss (Jr. • Monroe). Tornow, an outfielder, was named to the first team for the second straight year after being a second-team choice in 2008. Heinzelman, an outfielder, and Wyss, a shortstop, both received third-team honors. Heinzelman was also a third-team selection in 2008.

Breaking records that she set last season, Tornow hit .500 with 40 walks and a .617 on-base percentage this year. In starting all 43 games, she racked up eight home runs, 19 doubles and 45 runs batted in. Tornow also compiled 42 runs scored, two triples and eight stolen bases.

Tornow had three or more hits in a game on eight occasions. Six of those games came in succession during early April, as Tornow went 19-for-22 at the plate (.864). In a pair of victories over Macalester College (Minn.) and Grinnell College (Iowa), she piled up seven hits, five runs batted in and three runs scored. During a doubleheader setback with UW-La Crosse, Tornow attained six hits, four runs scored and five runs batted in. She recorded six hits, four runs and five runs batted in the next day to earn a split with the University of Chicago (Ill.). Tornow's finest day of the year came during a sweep of UW-Platteville, when she posted six hits, six runs and 11 runs batted in.

Tornow concluded her 152-game career as UW-Oshkosh's all-time leader in batting average (.420), slugging percentage (.777), home runs (31), runs batted in (146), runs (122), walks (89) and stolen bases (28). She lists second in school history in hits (185), doubles (48) and triples (8).

Heinzelman hit .387 this season to list second on the Titans. She blasted a team-high nine home runs in addition to 13 doubles, three triples, 41 runs scored and 44 runs batted in. Her .802 slugging percentage ranked third in the WIAC, as she finished second in getting on base (.507) and fourth in both runs scored and runs batted in.

After missing all of 2009 with an injury, Heinzelman came out of the gate on fire. Her season-opening doubleheader included seven hits, four home runs, six runs scored and nine runs batted in. In a win over Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.), she went 3-for-3 with a trio of runs scored, two doubles and three runs batted in. Heinzelman booked seven runs batted in on three hits while scoring twice in the Titans' victory against UW-Stevens Point.

Heinzelman has increased her batting average by at least 44 points each year and now owns a .332 career mark. She has seen action in 128 contests, amassing 15 homers, 34 doubles and seven triples. Heinzelman has scored 112 times, drove in 83 runs, stolen 13 bases and reached first via a walk 67 times.

Wyss picked up her first all-region selection after posting 11 multi-hit games this year. She started all 43 contests and tallied a .343 batting average with four home runs, 11 doubles and two triples. Stealing a team-best nine bases, Wyss also marked 41 runs scored and 28 runs batted in.

The team's third-leading hitter, Wyss was the only UW-Oshkosh player to get five hits in a game, as she also scored five times in a triumph over UW-Stevens Point. During a pair of wins against Graceland University (Iowa) and Macalester College, Wyss totaled six hits, six runs scored and seven runs batted in. She also tallied five hits while scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs to gain a doubleheader sweep against the University of Arkansas-Monticello and Freed-Hardeman University. Wyss went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and two runs batted in as the Titans defeated UW-Superior.

Wyss has started all 123 games since she came to UW-Oshkosh in 2008. During those three years, she has tallied eight home runs, 27 doubles, five triples and a .343 batting average. Wyss also has scored 95 runs and drove in 62 more while stealing 24 bases.

The All-Great Lakes Region First Team included two other representatives from the WIAC, UW-Eau Claire's Katie Stalker and UW-Superior's Taylor VanDamme. Carthage College had the most members with three (Kelsey Epping, Stephanie Noel and Alyssa Schrader), while Aurora University (Ill.), Benedictine University (Ill.) and Lakeland College each had two.
