Titans, 24th-Ranked Yellowjackets Split Twinbill

The UW-Oshkosh women's softball team marked in all five innings of game one to split a doubleheader with UW-Superior on Tuesday (April 27) in Superior.

The Titans (16-18/4-6 WIAC) won the first contest, 13-5, after tallying six runs in the fourth inning to break the game open. The Yellowjackets (23-5-1/7-3 WIAC) took game two, 7-5, capitalizing on a two-run single from Ashley Martin in the fourth frame.

Sydnee Wyss (Jr. • Monroe) scored on a wild pitch in the first frame and Jamie Braden (Jr. • Lake Villa, Ill.) slammed a run-scoring double during the second to give the Titans a 2-0 lead in the opener.

UW-Superior, ranked 24th in the NCAA Division III by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, used a two-run single from Chelsey Jarzin and a tally from Jen Parcham on a wild pitch to knot the game in the second.

After Wyss marked to end the third frame, the Titans used two-run hits by Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah), Wyss and Hayley Freimuth (So. • Combined Locks) to earn a 9-3 advantage in the fourth inning. A two-run slam from Braden, paired with a sacrifice fly by Amie Heinzelman (Sr. • Monroe), and a run-scoring single from Freimuth gave UW-Oshkosh a 13-3 cushion.

The Yellowjackets concluded the scoring in the contest, using RBI hits from Jackie Groshens and Ashlee Olson to post the final tally.

The victory belonged to Courtney Wautier (Fr. • Brussels), who allowed three runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings. Tatum Schultz (Fr. • Oshkosh) tossed the final 1.1 frames for the Titans.

Kalli Kucharyski pitched the opening two innings for UW-Superior, allowing three runs on three hits. Amanda LeBard took the loss, tossing two innings and giving up six runs, before Sarah Henk threw the final frame and surrendered four runs.

The Titans totaled 13 hits in the contest, led by Wyss with three and Heinzelman, Braden and Freimuth all with two apiece. UW-Superior marked 10 hits, receiving three from Alexis Podpeskar and two each from Lindsay Garay and Olson.

Lindsey Mikulecky (Fr. • Union Grove) blasted a run-scoring single in the second frame to start game two. Lisa Hart (So. • Oshkosh) and Tornow each marked in the third inning for a 3-0 Titans lead.

UW-Superior tied the contest at 3 in the third thanks to a sacrifice fly from Kucharyski and a two-run shot to right field by Taylor VanDamme. A two-run single from Martin and an RBI hit from Kucharyski in the fourth frame added to the lead, while a base hit from Parchem in the fifth built the Yellowjackets' cushion to 7-3.

Heinzelman smashed a run-scoring double in the sixth and Kelley Koebler (So. • Janesville) tallied an RBI single in the seventh, cutting the deficit down to two before Kucharyski forced the final two Titans to ground out.

LeBard earned the victory for UW-Superior, tossing 6.1 innings while giving up five runs on 11 hits. Kucharyski pitched the last two outs, earning the save.

Ashley Kowalewski (So. • Greenfield) threw the opening five frames for UW-Oshkosh, allowing four runs on seven hits while fanning five. Schultz took the loss for the Titans, surrendering three runs and three hits in one inning.

UW-Oshkosh notched 12 hits, led by three from Hart. The Yellowjackets tallied 10 hits, receiving three from Martin and two from Garay.
