Titans Unable To Net Kohawks

Ashlee Simon notched a complete-game victory in game one and earned the save in the second contest to lift Coe College (Iowa) over the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team on Saturday (April 17) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Kohawks (18-11) took the opener, 8-1, after Simon struck out 16 batters and allowed only one run. Simon then sat down the final two batters during a 9-1 victory in game two.

Coe College marked first in game one, using a run-scoring double from Mackenzie Lang to open a 1-0 advantage in the first frame.

Katie Gibson and Katie Kramer each had a run-scoring single to start the fifth frame for Coe College. Simon gave the Kohawks a 6-0 advantage later in the inning with her bases-clearing smash through the left side.

UW-Oshkosh (11-15) marked its only run of the contest in the sixth inning when Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) blasted a run-scoring double. Callie Morningstar responded in the bottom half with a solo home run to give the Kohawks a 7-1 lead. Gibson then added a run-scoring hit late in the frame to create the game's final score.

The victory belonged to Simon, who allowed three hits and struck out 16 of the 26 batters she faced. Courtney Wautier (Fr. • Brussels) took the loss for the Titans, surrendering six runs and eight hits in 2.2 innings. Tatum Schultz (Fr. • Oshkosh) pitched the final 3.1 innings for UW-Oshkosh, giving up two runs on four hits.

The Titans tallied three hits in the game, receiving one apiece from Tornow, Sydnee Wyss (Jr. • Monroe) and Julia Burns (So. • Verona). Coe College notched 12 hits in the contest, led by two each from Morningstar, Gibson, Kramer and Simon.

After Lang knocked a run-scoring hit to begin game two, Shannon Aguero brought in two more during the second frame, and Sidney Ridout added a run-scoring single in the third to give the Kohawks a 4-0 cushion.

The Titans cut their deficit to three in the sixth inning when Lisa Hart (So. • Oshkosh) brought home Tornow with her base hit up the middle.

Jacki Finley scored on a sacrifice fly from Amanda Hanson to start the sixth for Coe College. A two-RBI double from Morningstar and a two-run blast from Chelsea Zaugg
completed the scoring.

The win belonged to Kramer, who tossed 5.1 innings, giving up one run and five hits while striking out eight. Simon pitched the final two outs for the Kohawks, earning the save.

Ashley Kowalewski (So. • Greenfield) took the loss for UW-Oshkosh, surrendering six runs and nine hits in 5.2 innings. Wautier faced three batters in the sixth frame for the Titans, allowing three runs and two hits.

Tornow extended her hitting streak to 14 games with one of the Titans' five hits in the contest. In addition, Wyss, Hart, Burns and Kelley Koebler (So. • Janesville) each notched a hit for UW-Oshkosh. Coe College marked 11 hits in game two, receiving two apiece from Aguero, Lang, Zaugg and Abby Wedemeier.
