Titans Stick A Fork In The Blue Devils

The UW-Oshkosh women's softball team used a pair of late-inning rallies to sweep a doubleheader over UW-Stout on Sunday (May 2) at the Oshkosh Sports Complex.

The Titans (21-19/9-7 WIAC) earned a 6-5 victory in game one when Amie Heinzelman (Sr. • Monroe) drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the seventh frame. The Blue Devils (14-24/3-13 WIAC) surrendered a bases-loaded double to Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) during the final inning to drop the nightcap, 4-3.

UW-Oshkosh started game one with Sydnee Wyss (Jr. • Monroe) marking on an error by UW-Stout in the bottom half of the first. A run-scoring smash to left from Lindsey Mickulecky (Fr. • Union Grove) earned a 2-0 advantage in the second frame for the Titans.

The Blue Devils took a 3-2 lead in the top half of the third with a two-run double from Kelly Conway and a run-scoring single from Jenna Johnson. Tornow later knotted the contest in the bottom half of the frame with her RBI single to center field.

A double to center by Kat Nelson and a sacrifice fly from Alison Gray in the fourth inning gave UW-Stout a 5-3 cushion. Tornow singled to start the bottom of the sixth frame before Heinzelman tied the game for UW-Oshkosh with a home run blast to left field.

Wyss and Lisa Hart (So. • Oshkosh) each got on base to begin the seventh, so the Blue Devils elected to intentionally walk Tornow. With the bases full, Heinzelman drew four balls to end the contest.

Courtney Wautier (Fr. • Brussels) tossed the opening 2.1 frames for UW-Oshkosh, allowing three runs on five hits. Ashley Kowalewski (So. • Greenfield) earned the victory for the Titans, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out three in 4.2 innings. Kristy Hoffman took the complete-game loss for UW-Stout, surrendering six runs on seven hits and fanning five.

The Titans notched seven hits in game one, led by three from Wyss and two by Tornow. UW-Stout had nine hits, receiving three from Gray and two apiece by Nelson and Jamie Olson.

UW-Stout marked first in the third inning of game two when Sam Sarna scored on a Titans' error. A two-run single from Olson in the top half of the fourth then gave the Blue Devils a 3-0 advantage.

The Titans marked in the seventh frame when Brittany Roen (Fr. • Beaver Dam) tallied on a single to right field by Wyss. Soon after, Kelley Koebler (So. • Janesville) smacked a base hit to load the bases. Tornow continued her impressive season by blasting a three-run double to capture the win.

Wautier pitched the first three frames for the Titans, surrendering three runs on four hits. Kowalewski earned her second victory of the day, allowing just one hit in four innings. Hoffman took her second complete-game loss of the day, allowing four runs on nine hits while fanning three.

The Titans tallied nine hits, led by three from Koebler and two by Tornow. The Blue Devils had five players notch one hit apiece in the contest.

UW-Oshkosh will compete in the WIAC Tournament on Friday (May 7).
