Titans Run To 20th Place At NCAA Championship

UW-Oshkosh finished 20th among 32 men's cross country programs at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Championship Saturday (Nov. 20) at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.

The four-time Division III champion Titans totaled 541 points as a contestant in the team competition for the 24th time and first since finishing 13th at the 2015 national meet.

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Calif.) scored 80 points to successfully defend its title from 2019. The 2020 Division III Championship, scheduled for Terre Haute, Ind., was not held due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology finished second to the Sagehens in Saturday's team standings with 112 points while Williams College (Mass.) placed third with 167, John Carroll University (Ohio) fourth with 179 and UW-Whitewater fifth with 201.

Completing the top 10 teams were sixth-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (Calif.) with 225 points, seventh-place Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) with 248, eighth-place State University of New York at Geneseo with 301, ninth-place Wartburg College (Iowa) with 306 and 10th-place UW-La Crosse with 321.

UW-Oshkosh entered Saturday's meet ranked 19th nationally by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The top-ranked team in team in the country was Wartburg College.

UW-Oshkosh calculated its team score with the finishes of sophomores Mitchell Bradford and Joe Kehoe, junior Steven Potter, and seniors Cody Chadwick and Andrew George.

Bradford placed 79th among the meet's 294 runners in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 24:41.2 while George finished 133rd in 25:01. Kehoe placed 160th with a time of 25:07.9, Potter 169th in 25:12.8 and Chadwick 181st in 25:19.9. Chadwick previously finished 21st at the 2019 Division III Championship to earn All-America honors and 67th in 2018.

The Titans also had senior Andrew Rathkamp finish 243rd and sophomore Jason Ford 260th with times of 25:50.5 and 26:04.1, respectively.

Alex Phillip of John Carroll University won the individual title with a time of 23:27.6 while Elias Lindgren of Williams College finished second in 23:30.3 and Henry Pick of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges third in 23:40.4.

Completing the list of runners in the top five were fourth-place Aidan Ryan of Williams College with a time of 23:42.8 and fifth-place Simon Heys of Wilmington College (Ohio) in 23:57.0.

The top 40 competitors in Saturday's race received All-America accolades, an award achieved by the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country program 43 times.

UW-Oshkosh earned one of 22 at-large berths into the Division III Championship after recording attention-grabbing results during the season, including third-place finishes at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship held Oct. 30 and the Division III North Regional held last Saturday (Nov. 13) at the Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wis.
