Titans Finish Third At NCAA North Regional

UW-Oshkosh made a statement in hoping to race as a team at the upcoming national men's cross country championship by finishing third at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III North Regional Saturday (Nov. 13) at the Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax.

The Titans, who entered the regional ranked 27th nationally by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, placed all five of its scorers in the top 42 listings to total 124 points in the 29-team meet.

UW-Whitewater edged UW-La Crosse by one point, 58-59, for the regional title. UW-La Crosse defeated UW-Whitewater, 31-35, for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship at the same venue on Oct. 30.

Following third-place UW-Oshkosh, a four-time Midwest Regional champion, in the team standings were fourth-place UW-Eau Claire with 139 points and fifth-place St. Olaf College (Minn.) with 167.

Completing the list of top 10 squads were sixth-place UW-Stout with 197 points, seventh-place Carleton College (Minn.) with 198, eighth-place Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) with 219, ninth-place Saint John's University (Minn.) with 220 and 10th-place Concordia College (Minn.) with 314.

UW-La Crosse entered the regional ranked eighth nationally while UW-Whitewater was 10th, Carleton College 15th, St. Olaf College 24th and UW-Eau Claire 29th.

The North Regional was being contested for the first time. Since the early 1970s teams in Minnesota competed at the Central Regional while squads in Wisconsin participated at the Midwest Regional.

UW-Whitewater's North Regional victory qualified the Warhawks for next Saturday's (Nov. 20) Division III Championship at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The remainder of the 32-team field (nine regional champions and 22 at-large selections) will be announced Sunday (Nov. 14).

Mitchell Bradford led UW-Oshkosh by crossing the finish line in a 17th-place time of 25:01.49 for the 8,000-meter race. He was a 76th-place finisher at the 2019 Midwest Regional.

The Titans packed three runners together for some critical team points as Cody Chadwick finished 20th with a time of 25:02.69, Steven Potter 22nd in 25:03.22 and Andrew George 23rd in 25:03.45.

Chadwick, who earned All-America honors with his 21st-place finish at the 2019 Division III Championship, ranked 11th at the Midwest Regional in 2019, 26th in 2018 and 39th in 2017. George previously finished 33rd regionally in 2019 and 85th in 2018 while Potter placed 41st in the region in 2019 and 67th in 2018.

Rounding out the Titans' seven-person lineup on Saturday were Joe Kehoe, Jason Ford and Andrew Rathkamp.

Kehoe placed 42nd with a time of 25:34.95, Ford 59th in 25:54.28 and Rathkamp 77th in 26:11.37.

The top 35 individual finishers from the North Regional received all-region status.

UW-Whitewater owned the top two runners in the race as David Fassbender strolled to the individual title with a time of 24:34.05. Warhawk Christian Patzka finished second among the meet's 222 runners with a time of 24:34.48.

Following the two UW-Whitewater runners were third-place Ethan Gregg of UW-La Crosse in 24:40.39, fourth-place Logan Bocovich of St. Olaf College in 24:41.73 and fifth-place Lloyd Young of Saint John's University in 24:43.15.

Individually, the top seven finishers from each of the 10 regions not on one of the team qualifiers will also earn an invitation to the Division III championship. Those selections will also be announced Sunday.
