Titans Race To Third-Place Finish At WIAC Championship

The UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team finished third at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship (presented by Culver's) Saturday (Oct. 30) at the Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax.

UW-Oshkosh, a 10-time WIAC champion, totaled 95 points en route to its third-place finish. The Titans were a fourth-place finisher at the 2019 championship before the 2020 league event was canceled due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

UW-La Crosse edged second-place UW-Whitewater, 31-35, to win its fourth straight WIAC title and 36th overall.

Finishing behind third-place UW-Oshkosh in the team standings were fourth-place UW-Eau Claire with 100 points, fifth-place UW-Stout with 122, sixth-place UW-Stevens Point with 168, seventh-place UW-Platteville with 182 and eighth-place UW-River Falls with 258.

UW-Whitewater entered Saturday's meet ranked eighth in the NCAA Division III by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, UW-La Crosse 11th, UW-Oshkosh 22nd and UW-Eau Claire 29th.

UW-Oshkosh was led by Cody Chadwick, who completed the 8,000-meter course with a 10th-place time of 25:25.7. Chadwick previously finished eighth at the WIAC meet in 2019, 12th in 2018 and 26th in 2017.

The Titans also had Steven Potter finish 11th with a time of 25:27.7, Mitchell Bradford 17th in 25;42.6, Joe Kehoe 26th in 26:01.0 and Andrew George 35th in 26:19.9. Potter placed 13th, Kehoe 27th, George 29th and Bradford 46th at the 2019 championship while George finished 42nd and Potter 46th at the league meet in 2018.

Other UW-Oshkosh representatives at this year's championship were Jason Ford, Andrew Rathkamp, Eduardo Neri, Dwight Hosni, Ryan Dolnik, Andrew Strasser and Cody Witthun. Ford finished 43rd with a time of 26:39.4 while Rathkamp place 46th in 26:44.0, Neri 47th in 26:44.7, Hosni 61st in 27:19.4, Dolnik 62nd in 27:19.5, Strasser 77th in 28:10.9 and Witthun 28:18.0.

UW-Whitewater's David Fassbender claimed the individual title with a time of 24:35.1.

UW-La Crosse's Ethan Gregg finished second in the race with a time of 24:39.5 while UW-Whitewater's Gunner Schlender was third in 224:48.5, UW-Whitewater's Christian Patzka fourth in 24:54.1 and UW-La Crosse's Isaac Wegner fifth in 25:04.5.

The top 10 individual listings were completed by the sixth-place time of 25:11.8 from UW-Eau Claire's Connor Dolan, seventh-place time of 25:24.5 from UW-La Crosse's Ethan Thompson, eighth-place time of 25:24.6 from UW-La Crosse's Parker Huhn and ninth-place time of 25:25.1 from UW-La Crosse's Chad Franz.

The top seven runners in Saturday's race received All-WIAC First Team recognition, while runners placing eighth through 14th earned Second Team accolades. Individuals finishing 15th through 20th collected Honorable Mention laurels.

Following a weekend off, all eight WIAC programs return to the Whitetail Golf Course on Nov. 13 for the Division III North Regional. The Division III Championship will be held Nov. 20 at the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
