Titans Run To WIAC Championship Third-Place Finish

Jordan Carpenter finished fifth and Charlend Howard seventh, propelling UW-Oshkosh to third place at the WIAC Men's Cross Country Championship held Saturday (Oct. 31) at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne.

UW-Eau Claire, ranked first in the NCAA Division III by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, won its second straight and third overall WIAC championship with 33 points.

Runner-up and eighth-ranked UW-La Crosse scored 80 points to edge out 20th-ranked UW-Oshkosh's third-place total of 82. UW-Platteville finished fourth with 104 points, 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point fifth with 111, UW-Stout sixth with 153, UW-Whitewater seventh with 191 and UW-River Falls eighth with 204.

UW-Oshkosh placed fourth last year and owns 10 WIAC titles, the second-highest total in league history.

Carpenter, who finished third at last year's championship and 17th in 2013, completed the 8,000-meter course with a time of 25:11. Howard traversed the course in 25:35.

UW-Oshkosh also received scoring performances from Wal Khat, Roberto Lara and Brian McKnight. Khat placed 14th in 26:02, Lara 16th in 26:11 and McKnight 40th in 27:01.

UW-Platteville's Ian LaMere captured the individual title in the 92-runner field with a time of 24:08. LaMere also finished fifth in 2014 and 11th in 2012.

UW-Eau Claire's Josh Thorson, the defending champion, placed second with a time of 24:49, while teammates Ryan Mugan was third in 25:00, Darin Lau fourth in 25:04 and Christian Leitner sixth in 25:31.

UW-Whitewater's Brett Harms finished eighth in 25:44, UW-Stevens Point's Neil Pedersen ninth in 25:51.31 and UW-La Crosse's Austin Zajkowski 10th in 25:55.

UW-Oshkosh also had Trevor Damkot finish 48th in 27:01, Jacob Rost 49th in 27:01, Joe Zack 58th in 27:22, Mitch Pauers 64th in 27:33, Justin Skinkis 78th in 27:57, Fabian Salinas 80th in 28:09 and Ken Peters 83rd in 28:18.

The top seven runners from the meet received All-WIAC first team recognition, while runners placing eight through 14 earned All-WIAC second team accolades. Individuals finishing 15 through 20 claimed honorable mention laurels.

The Titans are off until they compete at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Nov. 14 in Rock Island, Ill.
