Dewitt Repeats As Winner Of NCAA Elite 89 Award

UW-Oshkosh's John Dewitt (Sr. • Oshkosh) has been named the NCAA Division III men's cross country winner of the Elite 89 Award for the second consecutive year.

The Elite 89 Award recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

Dewitt, the only two-time winner of the four-year-old award, earned All-America status with his 32nd-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship held Nov. 17 in Terre Haute, Ind. He completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:02.

Earlier this year, Dewitt placed third at the WIAC Championship, eighth at the Notre Dame Invitational and ninth at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional.

In 2011, Dewitt finished 69th as UW-Oshkosh placed fourth in the team competition at the NCAA Division III Championship held in Winneconne.

Dewitt carries a 4.0 grade-point average as a major in both mathematics and secondary education. He is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and the 2012 winner of the WIAC's Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award for men's cross country.

The President of Athletes in Action is also a leadership team member for Campus Crusade for Christ. Dewitt has volunteered for the Chancellor's Run/Walk and International Walk to School Day. He also works as a tutor and undergraduate research assistant and in UW-Oshkosh's mathematics lab.
