Dewitt Runs To Top-10 NCAA Regional Finish

John Dewitt (Sr. • Oshkosh) finished ninth for the second consecutive year as the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team placed 11th at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional held Saturday (Nov. 10) at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne.

Four-time defending regional champion North Central College (Ill.) captured the team title with 58 points, while UW-La Crosse finished a distant second with 114. Washington University (Mo.) placed third with 135 points, Wheaton College (Ill.) fourth with 140 and UW-Eau Claire fifth with 145. All five squads are expected to represent the Midwest Region at next Saturday's (Nov. 17) NCAA Division III Championship in Terre Haute, Ind.

Rounding out the top-10 teams were sixth-place University of Chicago (Ill.) with 171 points, seventh-place UW-Stout with 178, eighth-place UW-Platteville with 225, ninth-place Augustana College (Ill.) with 251 and 10th-place UW-Stevens Point with 252. UW-Oshkosh ranked 11th among the 39 competing teams with 256 points.

Dewitt led UW-Oshkosh with his 8,000-meter time of 24:44. The performance earned Dewitt a spot in the upcoming NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-Stout's Tim Nelson won the individual title with a time of 24:24. Yonatan Mascot and Dan Kelley, both of North Central College, finished second and third with times of 24:26.30 and 24:26.88, respectively. Aaron Esker of UW-Eau Claire placed fourth in 24:27 and Kevin Sparks of Washington University fifth in 24:30. A total of 271 runners completed the race.

Kenny Halloran (So. • Mount Prospect, Ill.), Derek Johnsrud (Jr. • Fall River), Matt Champan (Jr. • Waukesha) and Mike Foust (Jr. • Oshkosh) also contributed to UW-Oshkosh's team scoring. Halloran finished 46th with a time of 25:36, while Johnsrud placed 52nd in 25:41, Champan 65th in 25:58 and Foust 87th in 26:26.

UW-Oshkosh had two other runners crack the top 100 as Jerrod Berget (Jr. • New Richmond) finished 95th in 26:37 and John Block (Jr. • Madison) 99th in 26:41.
