Titans Run To Sixth Place At WIAC Championship

John Dewitt (Sr. • Oshkosh) placed third individually to highlight UW-Oshkosh's sixth-place finish at the WIAC Men's Cross Country Championship held Saturday (Oct. 27) in Cuba City.

Dewitt completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:04. It was the third top-12 finish for Dewitt, who placed 12th at the league event in 2010 and eighth a year ago.

UW-Stout's Tim Nelson repeated as the individual champion with his time of 24:34. He topped the field of 105 competitors to become the 13th person in WIAC history to claim multiple crowns.

In addition to Nelson and Dewitt, other runners finishing in the top five were Josh Dedering and Garrett Kerska of UW-La Crosse and Aaron Easker of UW-Eau Claire. Dedering finished second with a time of 24:59, while Easker placed fourth in 25:07 and Kerska fifth in 25:09.

UW-La Crosse scored 30 points to easily capture its first team title since 2009 and 31st overall. UW-Eau Claire finished second among the nine teams with 89 points, while UW-Platteville placed third with 92, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 98, UW-Stout fifth with 105 and defending champion UW-Oshkosh sixth with 117.

UW-Oshkosh also received team scoring from Kenny Halloran (So. • Mount Prospect, Ill.), Derek Johnsrud (Jr. • Fall River), Matt Champan (Jr. • Waukesha) and Jerrod Berget (Jr. • New Richmond). Halloran finished 16th with a time of 25:32, while Johnsrud placed 29th in 25:53, Champan 35th in 25:58 and Berget 43rd in 26:18.

Other UW-Oshkosh results had Mike Foust (Jr. • Oshkosh) finishing 57th in 26:39, Wilson Tobe (So. • Middleton) 61st in 26:47, John Block (Jr. • Madison) 63rd in 26:55, Jacob Clarke (Fr. • Racine) 68th in 27:06 and Ryne Scopp (So. • Kenosha) 69th in 27:07.

The top seven finishers receive All-WIAC first team recognition, while runners placing eighth through 14th earn All-WIAC second team accolades.

All nine WIAC teams are off until they compete Nov. 10 at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional in Winneconne. The event will be hosted by UW-Oshkosh at the Lake Breeze Golf Club.
