Twenty nationally ranked teams and more than 1,200 runners will compete in the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Cross Country Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 15) at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne.

A total of 51 women’s teams, including nine ranked in the top 25, will get the event started with their 6,000-meter competition at 10:30 a.m. There are 11 top-25 squads in the 50-team men’s race, which is 8,000 meters and scheduled for 11:15 a.m. The meet is the largest NCAA Division III cross country gathering in the nation this year.

On the men’s side, North Central College (Ill.) is the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III. The Cardinals won last year’s Brooks Invitational with 49 points, while Calvin College (Mich.) placed second and UW-Oshkosh sixth. Calvin College is currently the third-ranked team in the country, joining fifth-ranked Washington University (Mo.), seventh-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology and eighth-ranked UW-Oshkosh as top-10 teams coming to Winneconne.

Those squads will be joined by 12th-ranked Augustana University (Ill.), 13th-ranked New York University, 15th-ranked Wabash College (Ind.), 18th-ranked University of Chicago (Ill.), 20th-ranked UW-Stevens Point and 21st-ranked UW-Platteville.

The women’s division is led by third-ranked Washington University, fifth-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology and seventh-ranked Calvin College.

The remaining ranked squads competing are 13th-ranked St. Olaf College (Minn.), 15th-ranked Carleton College (Minn.), 16th-ranked Hope College (Mich.), 17th-ranked Emory University (Ga.), 19th-ranked New York University and 25th-ranked Ohio Northern University.

Washington University’s Michael Burnstein is the top returning runner after he placed second in 2010.  UW-Oshkosh’s Nate Stymiest (Sr. • Oconto Falls) took third at this race a year ago. The top returning woman, UW-Oshkosh’s Christy Cazzola (Jr. • Kaukauna), finished third in last season’s meet.

Runners will be covering the same terrain as the 1999 NCAA Division III Championships and the 1997, 2007 and 2009 NCAA Division III Midwest Regionals. This course will host the 2011 NCAA Division III Championships on Nov. 19.
