Dewitt Honored On Academic All-America Team

UW-Oshkosh's John Dewitt (Jr. • Oshkosh) is one of just seven men with a perfect grade-point average on the NCAA Division III Academic All-America Cross Country/Track & Field Team.

A total of 45 student-athletes were chosen for the team, which is sponsored by Capital One and selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Dewitt made the second team with his 4.0 cumulative GPA as a secondary education major. He was a third-team member last year.

Dewitt helped UW-Oshkosh to the WIAC cross country title by placing eighth (25:08) at the league meet on Oct. 29. He was the top Titan finisher when he took ninth (25:14) at the Midwest Regional on Nov. 12. At the 2011 NCAA Division III Championship, Dewitt received the Elite 89 Award for having the best GPA among national competitors.

On the indoor track, Dewitt was part of the UW-Oshkosh team that placed third at the national championship. He finished third individually in the WIAC’s 5,000-meter run with his time of 14:51.

Dewitt qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship with his 10,000-meter run (30:14.30) at the Gina Relays. He ended up placing 14th (31:50.55) in the national meet on May 26. At the conference championship, Dewitt took second with his 10,000-meter run in 31:11.59.

UW-Stout’s Tim Nelson won the Academic All-America of the Year award. He was joined on the first team by Michael Baer (Muhlenberg), Kale Booher (Ohio Wesleyan), Jeffrey Corelli (Rensselaer), Daniel Drewek (UW-Stout), Eyo Ekpo (St. Thomas, Minn.), Tyler Genovese (UW-Eau Claire), Kyle Hannon (Mass. Institute of Tech.), Tyler Jackson (Washington, Mo.), Dan Kerr (Calvin), Timothy Layng (Moravian), Kevin McCarthy (Wabash), Taylor Purdue (Rowan), Ben Scheetz (Amherst) and Greg Whittle (Calvin).
