UW-Oshkosh Second In Program Of The Year Standings

Top-four finishes in both indoor and outdoor track and field helped UW-Oshkosh place second in the 2012 Al Carius National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Men's Program of the Year standings.

The award, sponsored by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), is presented annually to the school that has the highest combined team finishes in each of the NCAA's cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field championships.

UW-Oshkosh, which won the 2009 Al Carius Program of the Year Award, took second in this year's competition with 12 points. The Titans finished third nationally in indoor track and field, fourth in outdoor track and field and fifth in cross country.

North Central College (Ill.) was the winner of its third straight Al Carius Program of the Year Award. The Cardinals compiled seven points after capturing national titles in both cross country and indoor track and field while placing fifth in outdoor track and field.

UW-La Crosse ranked third in the standings with 21.5 points, while Bates College (Maine) listed fourth with 40 and Wabash College (Ind.) fifth with 43.5. A total of 13 teams scored points in each of the three national meets.

The Al Carius Program of the Year Award was created in 2008. The award is named after USTFCCCA Hall of Famer and long-time North Central College cross country and track and field coach Al Carius.

The winner of the 2012 Deb Vercauteren NCAA Division III Women's Program of the Year Award was Wartburg College (Iowa). The award, also created in 2008, is named after USTFCCCA Hall of Famer and former UW-Oshkosh cross country and track and field coach Deb Vercauteren.

In order to be eligible for the awards, teams must qualify for each of the three NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the school’s finish at each national meet (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points), with the lowest combined total determining the winner of the award.
