Titans Achieve Third-Place Finish At Griak Invitational

Nate Stymiest (Jr. • Oconto Falls) and John Dewitt (So. • Oshkosh) were among the top six individual finishers as the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team placed third in the Division III Maroon Race of the Roy Griak Invitational held Saturday (Sept. 25) in Falcon Heights, Minn.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked 32nd in the NCAA Division III by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, tallied 123 points for its third-place finish. The WIAC swept the top three positions in the 30-team meet as sixth-ranked UW-Platteville finished first with 47 points and UW-Eau Claire second with 99.

Completing the list of teams in the top 10 were fourth-place and 15th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (Calif.) with 143 points, fifth-place and 16th-ranked Grinnell College (Iowa) with 171, sixth-place and 24th-ranked Hamline University (Minn.) with 199, seventh-place Loras College (Iowa) with 238, eighth-place Coe College (Iowa) with 247, ninth-place Wartburg College (Iowa) with 288 and 10th-place UW-River Falls with 359.

Stymiest led UW-Oshkosh by finishing second in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 25:44. Tom Sederquist of Concordia College (Minn.) ran his way to a first-place time of 25:39, while Patrick Klein of UW-Platteville finished third in 25:47, Jason Garvens of UW-Platteville fourth in 25:50, Ryan Schroeder of Coe College fifth in 25:53 and Dewitt sixth in 25:53.

Helping Stymiest and Dewitt form UW-Oshkosh's team score were Jake Keehan (Jr. • Green Bay), Jordan King (So. • Stevens Point) and William Koepp (Sr. • Lake Nebagamon). Keehan finished 20th with a time of 26:32, while King placed 44th in 26:57 and Koepp 52nd in 27:08.

The Titans also were represented at the meet by Zach Adams (So. • Lake Geneva), Erik Hofferber (Fr. • Neenah), Derek Johnsrud (Fr. • Fall River), Kenny Halloran (Fr. • Mount Prospect, Ill.), Nick Newcomer (Jr. • Winnebago, Ill.), John Block (Fr. • Madison) and Brett DeNure (So. • Monroe). Adams placed 55th with a time of 27:10, while Hofferber finished 61st in 27:16, Johnsrud in 27:19, Halloran 75th in 27:28, Newcomer 90th in 27:37, Block 92nd in 27:41 and DeNure 129th in 28:15. A total of 303 runners navigated its way through the course.

UW-Oshkosh splits its team on Friday (Oct. 1) to compete at both the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind., and the Carthage College Invitational in Kenosha.
