Titans Finish Fifth At NCAA Midwest Regional

Nate Stymiest (Jr. • Oconto Falls) finished fourth among 275 runners as the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team placed fifth at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional held Saturday (Nov. 13) at the Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill.

Two-time defending regional champion North Central College (Ill.) captured the team title with 37 points, while UW-Platteville finished second with 86, UW-Stevens Point third with 114, Washington University (Mo.) fourth with 122 and UW-Oshkosh fifth with 173.

North Central College entered the meet as the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Washington University ranked seventh in the national poll, while UW-Stevens Point listed eighth, UW-Platteville 10th and UW-Oshkosh 14th. All five squads are expected to represent the Midwest Region at next Saturday's (Nov. 20) NCAA Division III Championship in Waverly, Iowa.

Also finishing in the top 10 at this year's Midwest Regional were sixth-place UW-Eau Claire with 187 points, seventh-place UW-Whitewater with 220, eighth-place Augustana College (Ill.) with 227, ninth-place UW-La Crosse with 230 and 10th-place University of Chicago (Ill.) with 244. A total of 39 teams scored points.

Stymiest, who led UW-Oshkosh with an 11th-place finish at last year's Midwest Regional, completed this year's 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:14. Michael Spain of North Central College won the race with a time of 24:06, while Jason Garvens of UW-Platteville placed second in 24:10, Terry Witkowski of UW-Stevens Point third in 24:12 and Neal Klein of North Central College fifth in 24:16.

UW-Oshkosh had three other runners crack the top 50 as John Dewitt (So. • Oshkosh) finished 19th in 24:39, Jordan King (So. • Stevens Point) 40th in 25:05 and Jake Keehan (Jr. • Green Bay) 47th in 25:14. The Titans also had William Koepp (Sr. • Lake Nebagamon) place 63rd in 25:28, Mike Jarchow (Jr. • Oshkosh) 68th in 25:31 and Erik Hofferber (Fr. • Neenah) 74th in 25:35.
